How do I coax out my newborn's tongue?

I just had my baby Friday. He nursed enthusiastically from the start, but I'm noticing that he's not extending his tongue to latch on any more (maybe he never did?) and it's starting to hurt my nipple (blistering and a bit of blood). I think he manages to extend his tongue once he gets going, but right when he latches, I want to scream and swear He opens wide, but won't stick his tongue out. What should I do? Thanks.

I suggest getting him checked for a tongue-tie by someone who really knows what they are looking for.
