I have a male friend named Ariel. Everyone calls him Ari (ARE-ree) and I have never once thought of The Little Mermaid when seeing his full name. And I loved that movie when I was a kid. ;)  I'd just use Ariel if you like it, no matter what anyone else says.

My daughter's name is Olive, and my mother was horrified  that everyone would make fun of her because of Popeye and Olive Oyl.  (She called me in the hospital, in tears, to beg us to reconsider the baby's name.  It was awful.)  Guess what?  Only a handful of really rude, socially awkward people say anything at all about it.  Mostly, her name has just become her own, and it works.  We wouldn't change it for the world.  So I say, if you like the name Ariel, go for it, it's a good solid name with plenty of history and tradition behind it.  Don't let Disney screw it up for you!
