oak meadow - which grade?

Thread Starter

I am exploring the Oak Meadow curriculum and leaning heavily towards purchasing it.  But, I am wondering which grade would best fit my son...

He just turned 7, is pretty advanced in math, but still working on learning how to read.  I guess I'm concerned that 1st grade would be too basic in all ways EXCEPT the reading.

For those of you out there who have seen the 1st and 2nd grade curriculums...what would you advise?

maybe buy both, use both for the math and reading issues described in your post, use the 1st for everything else.  both are on sale i think in a few months - they have a big spring sale every year... just an idea.

If it were me, i would get first grade and get a supplemental math program to go with it. OM math at that level is mainly gnome stories and very basic. We used Miquon.

FWIW, i used first grade OM with my seven year old son who was reading fluently and he still got a lot out of it. Very easy to add to and expand where necessary.

Good luck!

With Oak meadow I would definitely go up a grade if in doubt, and you'll probably want to supplement the math regardless.

I would go lean going up too, 'cause you can always get the readers from the lower grades.  I bought grade 3 for my 7yo dd. for next year, but she is nowhere near the reading level of Little House books and what-not.  Otherwise I think it will be a good fit for her minus some of the stuff like circle time.

You may want join the OM yahoo group ( I think there is a link on the OM website). Lots of buying and selling of used curriculum going on there and you may be able to get 2 grades at a good price.
