Please help me find a system that keeps this diaper rash away

DD is almost one. She keeps getting diaper rash but it is more like sores than a rash. It is little red spot where the wet diaper rubs her and the skin comes off. At the moment I have resorted to disposables and Gaia natural baby cream until it heals then I want 'start over'. I use mostly motherease sandys and bamboozles with a flushable liner. For night time I have motherease one size with a stay dry liner. I use wool covers at night and pul or wool during the day. I use the weleda baby care cream with the cloth diapers. What should I be doing differently? Is there a good cream that I can use with cloth? Should I use a different kind of liner? Help! My poor baby needs me to figure this out.

I've read to give them a warm bath three times a day with a few sprinkles of baking soda in the water, and it should clear it up.

Karen at GMD wrote on her website that pure lanolin is the best diaper cream to use. I've been using the left over Lansinoh that is made for breastfeeding. It's all the same. It's so natural that I don't feel bad putting it on DS all the time. Maybe that would help

But is it OK to use lanolin with cloth diapers? Wouldn't it make them repel water? I actually have some that I could try but I don't want to wreck my diapers.

one the GMD website it says that as long as you wash your diapers on hot the lanolin will dissolve and be washed away. I'm trying it right now because DD got left in a wet prefold too long a couple of times over the last few days and is having some rash. we have no rash if I'm careful to change her every time she pees, so frequent diaper check can also help a lot.

I think I will try the lanolin. I also have done some research and I might try a fleece liner at night. She is in the same diaper all night so I think this is the main culprit. I think that I will also risk using a zinc oxide cream with a disposable liner during the day if there's any redness. The only problem is I have no fleece to cut up! I've been so set on only using natural fibres but I'd rather use fleece than let my poor baby have a sore bum.

Something you might try too (that has helped us) is using an open pail (no lid) with your cloth diapers if you're having any ammonia issues.

I've been using zinc + a disposable liner for about 2 months on DS now as he has had some strange recurring (non-yeast) rash. For the most part I've managed to spare getting cream on my diapers - it hasn't been perfect. I use the Bummis liners, and I double-fold them (I've found the cream can come through the liner if it's just a single layer). I don't love the disposable liners - I have to toss them because they clog our toilet - but better than tossing a completely diaper. I may try lanolin - sounds like it would be a good compromise.

How often are you changing her? Whats your wash routine? Is she BF? Is she drinking any water w her solids?

My DS has had an open weeping rash on and off for months now. There are a few things that help... Going coverless. I put him in a fitted and babylegs and slippers. My fitteds change color when theyre wet, so its easy to see when he pees. Change him immediately. 2 days of this w no other intervention on my part gets the light rash cleared up. I do have to wash every night though, and his night-time dipe is fleece lined.

The worst of the rash - the open weeping sores, need more attention though. I'm not thrilled w it, but i've been using a cream the ped recommemded. It only works on raw skin, but it forms a protective layer that does not wipe off and is not permeable. I do use paper liners w it because i have no idea what it'll do to my dipes, but it doesnt even stick to whole skin, only the open wounds. I had to go to Childrens to find it, it's called Ilex. I have a friend though who gets basically the same results w a thick paste of unpetroleum jelly and cornstarch.

And during all this rash activity, i make sure the dipes get an extra rinse and are washed on hot (my machine has a Sanitary cycle).

Oh, and part of our rash problem was really acidic poos. I've started giving him probiotics and yogurt daily, and it seems to have resolved that problem. I'm in the camp that it can't hurt.

I was just commenting to my husband that the diapers seem to smell less when they aren't in a closed container. Do you use an open pail for all dipes or just pee? My baby is EBF would I leave his poopy dipes in there too, what about when they start eating solids and having "regular" poo?

Have you ruled out food or other allergies? That is our main culprit for rashes.

I've been using it with all of our diapers, but she's no longer EBF, she's about half and half, so I do scrape/rinse her poopy diapers. I didn't when she was EBF.

The closed off pail seems to make it smell stronger. I notice that the ammonia is practically nothing in an open pail.

We use home-made fleece liners with Burt's Bee's (contains zinc oxide) diaper cream with our Mother Ease Sandy's diapers. I made the fleece liners by purchasing a yard of fleece at Joanne's fabric for about $8. No need to sew fleece, just cut the pieces to fit your diapers.

Microfleece liners and another good salve is northern essence diaper salve.

prefolds (trifolded}) stay dry liner pouches..stuffed in and then secure with a snap... and a cover is what we used for our wet sensative bebe..il_570xN.214225477.jpg

Thanks everyone. I went with the fleece idea and bought some remnant fleece in convenient 'baby poo brown' and have cut it up. It works really well, very soft and feels dry even after overnight. The problem I have now is that although the rash has mostly gone there are still a couple of 'sores' that are taking their time to heal. I'm think going diaper free will help them dry out but  it's hard to find much time in the day when we're just hanging out at home and she isn't sleeping. I've gone back to using the weleda diaper care as well, I don't think the gaia cream was thick enough, it's more of a lotion. I haven't tried the lanolin yet but I think I will. I really love the fleece liners though, I've gotta say.

I wanted to come back and say that I've been using lanolin on DS for 2 weeks now roughly, and his skin is better than it has been in months. AND it washes out of his diapers. AND it's cheaper than the expensive "natural" diaper salves. I hope it continues...
