best way to clean stainless steel applicances?

Can I just say how much I cannot stand having stainless steel appliances in my kitchen?  They are so hard to keep clean.  We inherited them with our house, however.  Anyway, what is the best non-toxic way to clean them??  Any advice is most appreciated!

We had them for the last year we lived at our last house and I thought they were a pain, too!  Particularly with a very 'hands on' toddler  LOL

Here's what I did:

First, wipe off any obvious dirt/smudges with a barely damp cloth (you don't want the surface wet, or to leave streaks).

Then apply a few drops (or maybe a tsp) of olive oil to a cotton cloth and wipe down the fronts.  You don't want them to be sticky with oil, you want just enough to lightly coat and then buff out a little with the rest of the clean cloth.  Works very well!

Good luck  :)

Instead of olive oil you can also use lemon oil.

Just wipe with the grain then buff with dry cloth/towel.

In between cleanings I find wiping down with water then drying (always with the grain) works just fine.  I rarely use anything else.

Another one here that just uses a damp cloth.  But I find to make it look nice drying with a microfibre towel right after really helps, it polishes it nicely (yup, always with the grain).

I think I'm going to try the oil idea though, thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the advice!  I will try the olive oil, since I have it at home.  Where do you buy lemon oil, though??

I only have a stainless fridge, I just wipe it down with a damp cloth, going with the grain.  It usually takes out the large smudges.  I don't think it ever looks perfect, but it's better than seeing hand prints all over the front of the fridge :)

I'll have to try the oil idea.  I use a microfiber towel that I spray a mist of water on.  I find that if I use too much water, it leaves streaks.  If it's really dirty, I'll wipe with a wetter clothe and do the microfiber with a mist of water after it's dry.

i spray endust on ours and wipe in a circular motion, works every time.

Like pp's I've always washed with a damp cloth and followed up with olive oil.

But recently I started using Bi-O-Kleen's soy-lube (had it in the garage for years, we weren't using it).  It works great on the stainless - cleans and shines.

I clean it with wet microfiber terry, then use Pledge to polish.  Works like a charm, just a tiny squirt.  I make my own homemade, natural cleaning products for everything except furniture polish.

Any oil  will work exactly the same, just buff off the excess with a soft cloth. I use canola oil.
