Holy sugar, ice cream!

DS doesn't get a lot of refined sugars, but this afternoon we went out for ice cream after his nap (mostly for me winky.gif). Wow. He was hardly recognizable a few hours later! He's usually energetic, but this was a bad energy.

I realize sweets aren't good for children, but are they ever able to handle the occasional sweet? Are some kids more sensitive to this sort of thing than others (I imagine so...)?

For now if I need ice cream, I'll get him a smoothie (with fresh fruit, no syrup!) but I have a sweet tooth & I don't know if I'll be able to refrain all the time... Though it'd be good for me too!

I have stories like yours before, but haven't experienced it yet with my 15month old. He is allowed to have sweets and treats in between, but he usually does not like too much of it. Maybe that's why he never had "bad sugar energy"?

Ah, yes being possessed by the sugar demon. This totally happens to my kid too. He very rarely gets refined sugar, but when he does Boy-O Watchout! It is a bad energy because its rather frantic and the kid has trouble controlling his urgency.

But he comes by it naturally...the same thing happens to me lol. Since I have such a history of blood sugar troubles I'm usually really on top of making sure he has eaten lots of protein before he gets sugar. Otherwise he turns into the Great Cornholio.
