Fabric for pouch/tube sling

So far I've made 4 slings. Three of them for myself. I've made a tube/pouch style out of polar fleece, and that one is really more comfortable to me now that my baby is heavier (he's 9 mos. and 22 lbs.) It distributes the weight so much better than a maya, ring sling type. As the weather is getting warmer, I'd like to make one that isn't so hot. What kinds of fabrics have people made into tube slings successfully. Does it need to be knit? What works best???

Have you tried a stretch woven like poplin or stretch twill? These typically have 97% cotton and 3% lycra. I make these all the time and people seem to like them as they 'give' just enough to make it more comfy...And the material is thinner, so great for summer.

I have used hemp/cotton t-shirt material from Wild-n-wooly goods and knit t-shirt fabric from the fabric store. I like the stretchy fabrics for tube slings and with t-shirt material you don't have to hem the selvages.

Thanks! I'll be on the lookout, and consider both depending on what I see that I like! The stretch woven sounds like it might be perfect. We'll see!

I second Kristen's recommendation! I like my pouches made with stretch twill or stretch corduroy. I really prefer my pouches with some give, and the 97/3 cotton/spandex has been a good combination for me too!

If you don't mind me asking...where did you get the pattern for the ube/pouch? I sew a little. Are they difficult? They look pretty easy, but I am not sure where to begin. Thanks.

The best online pattern for a pouch that I've seen is this one: http://www.ida.net/users/stace/sling.html There are also links to lots of other sites with online instructions at www.thebabywearer.com under Articles > Sewing and Improvising.

Good luck with it! It really is an easy sewing project.

Good question....
I'm wasn't sure I could answer that....
I looked at several sites w/ instructions and kind of improvised with happy results. Now that I see the previous post, I do see that the first link was, in fact, one of the ones I consulted. It's veeeery easy. I did make my first one too short, but it made a really nice gift for my friend who was due in the fall, and is shorter in the torso than I am. I just measured"mine" off of "hers" and made it a bit longer. I love it.
Somewhere I remember reading to make a practice one out of a cheap fabric. It is really an easy project, as I'm not a very good seamstress!
