Health, and the dreaded "Drugs" portion

Good Morning,

My oldest daughter is going to be in 4th grade next year and I have been discussing the big issues with her about changes with her body, sex etc so I thought I should begin discussing drugs/alcohol, which is a requirment under out state. I am looking for curriculum/book suggestions that are factual without being preachy.

We purchased Growing, Growing Strong and it is a nice overall health and safety curriculum.

Thanks,

Karen

What are the precise standards? If you don't feel this is the right age to discuss those things with your dd, you could just do the minimum and move on until she's more ready.

I always have heart to heart discussions with my children regarding sex, drugs, alcohol aside from any books that might be used. I think it is very important to engrain in children not to use drugs from the beginning. I know a lot of parents will wait until their children are doing them (I am not saying you would do that, I am just saying I see it a lot here and our high school has serious drug problems). I also talk to my children about internet dangers too, in my opinion, that falls under stranger danger and social skills so it needs to be covered.

I just think children need to hear it from us directly, even if they get it from a book or a program otherwise. Good luck!

I think she is getting to the age where it makes sense to discuss drug/alcohol issues but don't feel comfortable with the factual parts. Sure, I can talk about the concerns, risks, health problems but I guess I was hoping to find something that was approachable.
