Seriously considering dropping out

When I was pregnant I excitedly researched cloth diapers.  I wanted the most bang for my buck.  I really wanted to buy the BumGenius 3.0 (this was before the release of 4.0).  I was so excited... until I looked at the price tag.  I couldn't shell out that much at once!  Instead I bought Osocozy prefolds and Bummis Super Whisper Wraps off of Amazon.  36 infant prefolds, 24 premium prefolds, 2 small covers, 2 medium.  I thought it was great!!  I added in 2 Thirsties Duo covers (size 1), the detergent (Allen's Naturally), pail, and all the other stuff I needed and still had money left over to buy 2 BumGenius (which I thought would fit at 8 lbs).  Fast forward and DS is born... yay!!  He was 8 lbs 10 oz so I thought he was plenty big for the diapers I bought but we had him in disposables at first because I didn't want meconium on my new diapers.  When the meconium stopped I tried out a prefold.  The covers were way too big.  I tried out a BumGenius.  Cord stump was in the way.  Finally when his cord stump fell off I tried them again.  The Bummis were still too big around his legs and the BumGenius was still too big but the Thirsties cover fit.  I had troubles folding the prefold though so I temporarily went to a trifold (which ended up leaking poo all over the cover every time he went).  The BumGenius fit first but since we only had two I was doing laundry every single day, and sometimes twice a day, trying to keep at least one on hand.  When I was still frustrated with the prefolds I bought 24 SunBaby diapers.  I was reading great things about them but he kept soaking right through them.  I rewashed everything 4 more times on the hottest setting I could and it seemed to stop the problem for about a week and a half.

Now... The BSWW (Bummis Super Whisper Wrap) at 2 months still doesn't fit right around the legs sometimes and although I figured out how to put on the prefolds I think they're getting too small.  The SunBaby diapers are still leaking all over the place.  I thought about buying some doublers but then I wondered whether the problem was just the inserts or if the actual pocket is defective.  I don't want to spend all the money on doublers if he's going to keep soaking through everything (I've tried stuffing them with prefolds and it still leaked so it might be both the insert and pocket).  Until about a half hour ago my BumGenius were nowhere to be found but 2 working diapers seems like a joke when I have 48 that won't.

Right now he's in a disposable.  Unless he has a really big poop they work.  Even then, one explosion about every third day seems a million times better than having to change his whole outfit every time he pees!!

I'm surprised you think that the prefolds are getting too small.  DS is 17 lbs and still in the infant size prefolds.  Maybe try looking on youtube or something for some folding tutorials?  Also, the covers should be fine! Again, just maybe see if a different folding technique helps. We've had no issues with the prefolds and sounds like we've got a similar system to yours.  I know you were planning on doing EC.  That would fix the leakage problem if you started with poops.

Good luck, sorry your so frustrated!

You know, its all about shape.

My little guy was born at 8 lbs exactly, and the only cover that fit was a preemie cover. We couldn't fit into smalls until something like 3 mos. But some of the infant pfs he outgrew by then. Some he didnt. We still use the infant pfs as stuffers, though.

It also depends on the fold you're using w the pf. Angel wings is far narrower than jelly roll or bikini twist, for instance.

If none of your covers are fitting, id suggest Imse Vimse in a smaller size than you think. They run large, but their leg gussets are fab. At 16 mos, my guy can still fit in the small, although his dipes can't (in the rise). Or, if you're willing to give wool a try, i'd suggest pipers closet. Message her w measurements and she can custom fit a cover for under $20. Neither of these works well w a trifold pf though, IME.

As for dipes - do the Sun Babies fit snugly around the leg? If not, guaranteed leak. If they do, then i'd suspect repelling... How wet is the insert when you get a leak? You can also use pockets like covers over a pf, instead of stuffing them, if it helps w the leakage.

Honestly, with skinny legs, i had far more brands of dipes fail than succeed for us. Most of them gap hugely around the legs. Side snaps were a must for us. Dream-Eze (fitteds) was one of the only brands that has consistently worked for us. For pockets, Rumparooz, Swaddlebees and Knickernappies all work for us, but i didnt even start using pockets until he was a year old. But, the internal gussets of the Rumparooz would contain leaks regardless.
