Strange Pain - Can you tell me what it is?

I need help Mamas!  Baby #3 is 11months old.  I successfully nursed big brother and big sister until they self weened around 16 mo, but I'm having a lot of pain with this one.  It started a few weeks ago and is only in my left breast.  When he latches on it is toe curlingly painful for the first 30ish seconds and fades to tolerably uncomfortable for the remainder of the feeding.  Then (this is the really weird part) from about 30 min after feeding on that side to about 3 hours after the feeding I have deep stabbing burning pains in the underside of that breast.  Then they stop and it all starts over the next time I nurses on that side.  I've had mastitis and plugged ducts.  That's not what this is.  There are no lumps.  I've tried changing latch position.  The nipple looks mostly normal, maybe slightly pink, but I may be making that up.  I saw my midwife last week.  She had no idea.  I suspected thrush in the milk ducts and she (reluctantly) prescribed an oral anti yeast, it didn't do a thing.

Anyone ever hear of anything like this?  Any idea what I should do?  I'm thinking of just weaning on this side, but I'd rather not just give up on it.

Did your menstrual cycle recently return?  If it's been back for a couple of months or more, do you notice any waxing or waning of the pain based on your menstrual cycle?  I don't know about those after pains (odd!) but I had increasingly severe pain in my right breast after my cycle came back with my middle dc.  (But only while he was latched.)  IIRC, it was mildly painful in the first half of my cycle, then would get steadily worse after ovulation.  By the time I was expecting my period, it would bring me to tears!  Then once my period started, it would immediately be some better and the cycle would start again.  (Obviously, it was hormonal, but I don't know why it only happened with that kid.  shrug.gif)   Eventually it got worse and worse until I weaned on that side and nursed only on the left side for about a year until ds was 3.

I hope you find a cause and get some relief if possible!
