three days of not breastfeeding--have I killed my supp

Anyone able to revive their supply after a situation like this?

due to extenuating circumstances, I've spent three full days away from my six month old son.  on each of those days I've been able to nurse him about three times per day(the other times we supplemented with food and formula, and my friend's breast milk.  I didn't pump, only hand expressed a few times.

Now that I'm back with my son, my breasts feel flat, but he still seems to get a little bit each time.

We nurse every two hours and he pees(a smallish pee) every two hours.  he eats three small meals per day and gets a little bit of water with each meal.

Will my boobies be able to bounce back to their former glory(and, if so how?) ,

or will I have to bite the bullet and do formula?

Should I ditch the food and trust that my supply is enough?

Pump a lot and hope for the best?

Give up because I've killed the poor saggy thing already?

Called a La Leche League number but it's a weekend, so I don't know if they will get back to me right away and I'm really not sure what to do.

Any thoughts, advice, really appreciated

Thanks,

Jenica

After only three days, I think that you could re-establish supply.  Eating oatmeal (or a malt) helped me when I had low supply days.   Personally, I'd still give him food, though, if you're not sure you're making enough milk right now.

more food, but not formula?

I'd do food/breastmilk/a little water to make sure he stays hydrated, but not formula.  You could also pump in addition to breastfeeding, and then put that in a bottle.   (But don't give water if you're not giving food.)

I think this would be similar to bringing your supply back after an
illness or nursing strike. I've only had moderate drops in supply twice, but here are some suggestions for increasing supply based on what I've heard in LLL meetings and a breastfeeding support group.

• Take the baby to bed... spend as much time as possible skin to skin and in each other's company.
• If you're going to supplement with solids, nurse first and then offer solids.
• Pump for 5-10 minutes after the last drop to increase supply.
• Consider making some lactation cookies (I've used a gluten free, vegan version of this recipe: http://community.livejournal.com/breastfeeding/2288837.html#cutid1).

Good luck to you and your son! Hopefully you two can hide away and take a little nursing retreat to bring the supply back. smile.gif
