Almost 9 month old's left eye crosses in

We don't see an opthomologist for 3 more weeks.  She has had some other health issues since birth, and we have been so wrapped up in those.  We went to the Ped for a check up last week and she said....I think she was trying to look at both of us at the same time, as one of her eyes crossed.  She told us to keep an eye on it in case it wasn't a fluke.  So home we go, and danged if she isn't right.  It is crossed in All the time she is not tracking something.  She tracks fine, sees to overall see great, but that eye crosses in. And when she is drifting off, her right eye rolls directly back and her left eye rolls back but in.  I wouldnt really think much about it but with all of her other stuff going on, and a report from early childhood intervention that she has some delays, I am a little extra worried.  Anyone dealt with this before?

It sounds like strabismus.

I have no idea what this could mean for your DD, but for mine it meant that one eye was a bit weaker (the eye muscles, NOT the vision) and it rolled a bit outward when DD was tired.  It started a bit before 2.  She is 2.5 now and we can go weeks without noticing it.  We did patch everyday for awhile, but for the last few months we have been really bad about that, yet we have seen the most progress during this time.  It seems DD's strabismus is pretty mild and might just clear up all on its own.  She is just growing out of it, fingers crossed.  The last time at the ophthalmologist she could not detect it at all.  So, we just keep an eye on it (no pun intended) and make sure her eyes continue to work well together in the future.  I believe our next hurdle is to make sure she doesn't have problems in school regarding eye fatigue and convergence insufficiency.

At the first appointment DD's eyes were dilated, her vision was checked, and the doctor began basically fatiguing DD's eyes to get the eye to wander.  For us, it took about 15 minutes.  Surgery was never even mentioned in our case, but I know of a few people through friends that have had to go that route.

Good luck!  I remember our two week wait to see the doctor.  It sucked.

I had strabismus as a toddler, so if it does turn out to be that maybe this will put your mind at ease:

Started wearing glasses & a patch over my stronger eye when I was 2.  Was done with the patch definitely by school age, probably earlier than that as I don't have a lot of memories of wearing the patch.  Wore glasses until the third grade, then I was "cured" and didn't have to wear the glasses anymore.  I don't remember it being a big deal, other than the patch was itchy :)

Best of luck to you, try not to stress while you wait those three weeks... I know, easier said than done!
