Booster Seat Pillow???

Thread Starter

We recently purchased a booster seat for my DD who will be 5 in March.  She is soooo happy to be in a booster seat and loves it but when she falls asleep her head is slumped forward and it looks and probably is uncomfortable and probably not good for her.  Are there pillows or anything out there that works for any of your kiddos???

Thanks so much.

A lot of the booster seats I have seen have those backs that you can attach or detach and would offer a sort of head reast in the child fell asleep. Alternatively, if your version would not hook up to one of those, maybe an airline neck pillow might do the trick?

I was thinking about the bucky pillows, I love them.  I have the booster with the back and head rest but it doesn't keep her head back.  I was looking for a pillow that might attach to something, hmmmm.

thanks for your advice.

Same thing was happening with 4 1/2 yo DD in the car.  My solution is to pack one of those pop up cloth bins w/ toys & books & set it on the seat right next to her.  I also bring a standard size bed pillow along and when she starts looking sleepy I put it on top of the bin for her to lean on.  She's still slumped over to the side, but not so drastically and with support.  Works well for us thumb.gif

Please be aware that if your child slumps out of position (shoulder belt is not positioned on the center of the shoulder or the shoulder belt being pulled down/out by them laying on it), they are in serious danger of not being properly protected should you be in a crash or a sudden stop.

Perhaps a u-shaped pillow will work, as long as it's not affecting the shoulder belt.  Often a high-back booster will also help.  However, if your child is truely not able to stay sitting completely upright in a booster seat, even while asleep, then they are not ready to be in a booster seat.  This was the case with my boys - they would slump out of the seat belt while asleep until fairly recently.  They are 9 & 11.  There are a number of higher weight harnessed seats now on the market that would address this issue and keep your kiddos safe.

This doesnt sound safe at all.  If she is leaning over onto a box/pillow, then she isnt positioned properly.   In a booster seat the child MUST be sitting upright, otherwise the seatbelt cant do its job.

Many kids are not ready to sit in a booster seat until they are 5-6-7yrs old, because they fall asleep in the car and slump out of position.

OP, if its just her head slumping forward, but her body is in the right position, then its not a safety issue.  I'd use a small pillow that can be placed next to her head to lean her head sideways on, but I would NOT use anything behind her head (because it can push her head out of the safe position in a crash).  If its still an issue, try a different booster or a high weight harness seat (like a maestro, graco nautilus or frontier)
