Please help - I made an incredibly stupid mistake.

Im 11 weeks pregnant. I came on here because I know that you ladies have some thorough knowledge about supplements.

I was coming down with a cold. My knee jerk reaction is to take 2 high doses of the only vitamin C I can take, Calcium ascorbate.

I think I got about 8000mg total.

I was about to take some more today, when I realized - I could be putting the baby at harm. I looked up calcium ascorbate and pregnany online and not much came up - except "tell your Dr. if you are taking this while pregnant". I totally overdosed and I feel horrible about it.

Im so worried. Im imagining all kinds of things. If you know anything at all about this please help. Please be honest.

It's just calcium and vitamin c, right? I'm not expert but I can't imagine the harm in that at this point in your pregnancy. I looked up and vitamin c doesn't seem risky according to this article http://www.babycenter.com/406_is-it-safe-to-take-vitamin-c-during-pregnancy_1246889.bc and calcium is routinely given in pregnancy (think tums for heartburn).

As far as experts you could try calling poison control. I don't know how helpful they will be with pregnancy related issues or supplements like that either one but it can't hurt. It's anonymous and if they are able to give you an answer I would rely on it for sure.

Do you have a midwife or OB? It wouldn't hurt to mention it and would, likely, put your mind at ease.

Oh, I just realized this was in allergies. I'm going to move it to health and healing for more views.

Yes, it's calcium and vitamin C, but I took about 5 times the dose allowed for pregnant women.

I have a midwife, she told me never to do that again. She thinks the baby should be fine, but said it is dangerous.

I'm kicking myself.

I think that high doses of vitamin c are used to induce miscarriage in early pregnancy - high doses, repeated for several days. I wouldn't think 8000 mg would be high enough to do that, and I would also believe you to be far enough along in pregnancy for it too not matter.

Thanks Deditus.  I did see online that high doses of vit c (ascorbic acid) could cause miscarriage. That is  what I was worried about, even though it didnt say anything about calcium ascorbate.

I also saw that it could cause cell damage to the fetus.

I called the infant risk hotline and they couldn't give me any answers, they just told me not to do it again - which, of course, I have no plans to.

I wouldn't worry about it personally

8,000mg is not all that much and a one time dose like shouldn't cause any harm.
