how do you prevent baby from falling from bed

It happened last night.  Two and a half feet to hardwood floors.  He is fine and I am focusing on making sure it never happens again rather that on recriminations and guilt (that was all last night).

So what do you do to prevent baby from falling out of bed?  It happened so quickly - we just stepped out of the room for a second and he was fast asleep in teh middle of the bed.

Thanks!

We have a side railing on my side of the bed...its a hideaway railing we got from one step up I think.

The simplest solution for us was just putting our mattress on the floor so if DD were ever to roll out it wouldn't be much of a drop. We also put padding around the mattress at night just in case. Hope this is helpful!

We put the mattress on the floor in the corner, that was two sides taken care of. then we put rails on the other two. the hideaway kind

We have guard rails on both sides of the bed, and a monitor to listen for when he first wakes up (he tends to lie there for a little while before moving around).

Both our children have fallen off the bed - you'd think I would have learned after DD to put the safety rail up BEFORE I think they can scoot around...
