Just wondering who avoids honey, and do you avoid it ALL, or just the raw / or honey in it's natural state.
Do you not mind if it is in bread?
Just curious.
Thanks

We've avoided honey (in all forms) so far, but now that DD's turning one, we'll probably ease up on that. The botulism spores of concern apparently are temperature-resistant, so cooking doesn't kill them off. I think that the risk is really minimal, but I decided to err on the safe side on this one.
I spoke to a honey vendor at a farmer's market this summer and she that age has nothing to do with when a child can eat honey actually.
She said according to the American Honey Bee Association (or something like that) no child until the age of 2 should consume honey because it is not a matter of the child's stomach being strong enough to destroy the toxin or spores or whatever, but the physical length of the child's intestines. Now I don't know exactly what this means but it was a whole conversation we had as I was about to let DD try the end of one of those honey stick things that I had just finished. She freaked out when I did that (DD was over a year at this point). Sooo just food for thought!
FYI, I still let DD have stuff with honey in it, she's not 2 yet but she loves stuff that has a hint of honey and honey is great at easing coughs.
this is really interesting to me. not sure why, just trying to understand a little more, I guess.
My ds has definately had products w/ honey in them such as bread, but not raw honey yet. I am wondering actually how common it is to get botulisim , which in it self would be terrible. Yuck.
