Sewing buttons on a bulky sweater

I've just finished making my first baby sweater with this pattern http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/one-skein-wonder-baby-sweater and I'm thrilled with how it turned out.

I don't know how to sew the buttons on though - do I use just regular thread? Embroidery floss? The yarn I used doesn't seem like it would support regular thread very well - it was very loosely spun. But I've no idea how buttons are supposed to be sewn on sweaters...

Thanks!

You have 2 options, use yarn to sew your buttons on (doesnt have to be the same yarn, just same care instructions) or sew a backer button on. You sew a button on each side of the fabric, and the thread isnt actually putting any stress on the yarn, the backer button takes it all. The backer button doesnt have to match the front one, you can use any small button, in a color that blends w the sweater.
