antibiotics while breasfeeding question :(

I am really sad  :(  to even be posting this question. I have a history of periodontal disease- it was really bad and I had lots of procedures and lots of loss around it- a few yrs back before I had my now 11 month old baby. I have been keeping up very well with my dental hygeine since then and getting many cleanings a yr. None the less today at my cleaning and dental exam, it turns out that my infection is back. I cannot afford (in terms of health) to have this infection in my gums as I already have lost a lot of bone to it. I am freaking out. Anyway- one of the suggesitions for treatment from the periodontist is a 10 day run of amoxicillan (spelling ) antibiotic. I am normally not one to jump into antibiotics without just cause, though I do think they have their place.   HOwever- after years of dental surgeries and having risked almost losing many teeth to it- and after recent years of what iconsidered impeccable hygeine- to have this active infection again is just heartbreaking. SO I am inclined to take the 10 day antibiotics to help treat it as I know it will help and I am quite desperate about it all. However=- I am still breastfeeding my 11 month old ( and plan to until he is at least 2, more likely 3 or who knows if even more). So how exactly will a 10 day course of amoxycillan affect the baby? I googled it and saw that it may affect him similarly to how it would affect me- over yeast, affecting the gastro intestinal, etc- ugh.

what do I do? Do I take it? WOudl you? What can I expect?

I don't mind at all ME having to deal wiht the side effects of it based on what I have been through and what I could lose if I don't- and my unsureness of other treatments for htis right now- but I do not want ot hurt my ds obviously!

the dentist also mentioned somehting about possibly staining ds's teeth if I take antibiotics? But he was unsure. I am going to call ds's doctor and see what they say before deciding.

sorry for typos and mis spelling sI am rushing right now

That is what my family doc puts me on all the time.  It is generally considered safe for nursing moms...

Per Kelly mom ---

It is considered B (safe while pregnant) and an L1 (safest) for nursing.

It is also commonly prescribed to infants/newborns for infections (trust me, we have had many rounds of it for DS3 since birth)

thanks you guys! I was just remembering about probiotics after I posted this.  The last time I was on antibiotics (before pregnancy) I started getting all the typical antibiotic side effects and then I started probiotics and they totally went away! I was thinkng I would take a probiotic and also give ds infant probiotics while I was on it- would this be too much? any reccomendations on how much probiotics to give ds while I am on antibiotics? Once a day or twice?

thanks- IA m so bummed out to have this infection again and I really want ot be proactive- it is encouraging to hear that it can be okay evem while breastfeeding.

The doctor also recommended at some point a 9 month series of low does another kind of antibiotice- ugh- I highly doubt I will do that- but I would not do that while breastfeeding. But hopefully the 10 day course will help and also be okay.

i give my ds 1/2 the recommended daily dose, but i give it twice a day. probiotics can cause diarrhoea if baby gets too much, so you may need to just watch and change the dose accordingly.

That's a good idea- thanks for the input

I really hope these antibiotics do the trick for me
