Tamiflu?

So my husband got diagnosed with the flu today after being sick since Sunday.  He was given tamiflu.  I'm very worried about getting the flu.  My MW said to wait and see if I come down with symptoms and that we would deal with it then.  My husbands aunt is an OBGYN and I was talking to her and she "insisted" that I get on tamiflu as a preventative.  She told me how it can be very dangerous for pregnant women requiring hospitalization and being admitted to ICU.  I haven't read anything GOOD about tamiflu and pregnancy.  Do you think it would be bad to wait to see if I start coming down with symptoms before starting it?  I'm confused and I'm in tears trying to figure out what is best.  My son has moderate to severe asthma and was put on tamiflu by his pedi as a preventative.  What do you all think?

I wouldn't take it at all. I would probably more take the Oscillococcinum  from Boirion. It's a homeopathic product that you can find at Walmart or even your HFS.

I read an article a while back in the Atlantic Monthly about the flu, flu shot, and tamiflu.  If I remember correctly, the leading "flu expert" in the world thinks that tamiflu is basically good-for-nothing.  Don't know if that makes you feel better or not.

I second the homeopathics--can't hurt--I would also up your vit D to about 4000 IUs if you're not already there, get rest, wash your hands a lot.

The flu doesn't really scare me that much.  I think being pregnant and having the flu would be a pain, but I think your husband's aunt is just thinking worst case scenario.

But you have to do what makes you feel the most comfortable.  I personally would not take the tamiflu.

I would not take Tamiflu. I would do some immune boosting like others suggested.

Is Oscillococcinum safe for to take during pregnancy?

I researched Tamiflu a few years ago and IIRC the insert said it "reduced the duration" of the flu an average of 2 days (think it was 7 days vs. 9?) -- IF taken within the first 24-48 hrs of onset. But this result wasn't in a large percentage of individuals and I wasn't impressed with the controls.

My takeaway was that it was useless. YMMV.

Regardless of your conclusion, I wouldn't take it during pregnancy. It is not a preventative and not worth any potential risks. Far better to eat well, sleep well, and boost your immune system with some safe herbal supplements.
