Help for a long outta the CD scene mom?

post #1 of 3
Thread Starter

Sooo, my SIL is having her first (long awaited, much anticipated) baby in April. She is totally open, but also totally NEW at cloth. Our gift to her is diapers. My youngest "baby" is 17 so you can just imagine my face (i'm sure) when I went on an internet search. There are so many new cool diapers, covers, inserts, systems and so on. dizzy.gifHelp me!

 Key points to consider:

* first time mom

* basically new to cloth diapering

* looking for an easy, uncomplicated situation

* We're working w/ a budget of $50 or so for now

 I've had recomendations for GroVia, Flip, and kissaluvs. Thoughts? Should I just grab a few cool covers and hempy prefolds? I suddenly feel very old LOL.

I like the idea of the covers and nice prefolds. I prefer my thirsties covers for the EBF stage and even with a formula fed kiddo, at least until solids are started. So, you could get a couple thirsties covers and whichever prefolds look nice to you. If you have room in the budget, you may throw in a neat AIO or pocket for her to try. I might consider thirsties duo diaper size 1 (adjustable size pocket diaper) or one of the used dream-eze AIO's. - Both of those are available in the used diaper section on Jillian's drawers and the excellent condition used ones look like new - only washed. The fair condition ones could have stains which may not suit you for a gift. http://www.jilliansdrawers.com

Also great with the prefolds would be a snappi fastener. Those are easier than pins IMO.

That's my personal ideas for ya. You may consider the thirsties duo wrap with snaps if you want to let her see how she likes a snap cover vs a velcro one.

HTH some.

I agree with dayiscoming2006.   Good prefold diapers and diaper covers are the way to go!  Inexpensive, easy to use, easy to wash...I also like Thirsties covers.  Snappies are a good accessory too.  For around $50 you could probably get 20 infant size prefolds (SIL will want 24-36 to wash every 2 or 3 days, respectively), a Thirsties cover, a Snappi, and a wet/dry bag for storing dirty diapers in.  SIL would just need to buy herself 3 or so more covers, a few more prefolds, some good detergent, and any other accessories she might be interested in but which are by no means necessary (liners, doublers, diaper cream, etc.)  For a good guide on cloth diapering, check out www.bynature.ca.  If you're in the US greenmountaindiapers.com has great stuff.  I'm in Canada so didn't buy through them only because shipping was CRAZY and found caterpillarbaby.com a good resource for North of the 49th.

HTH!
