Michael Clay Thompson?

I was wondering if anyone here has used MCT before and if you liked it.  I'm considering using it next year, for third grade.  So far, LA has been unschooled so I'm a bit nervous about going into MCT but think he can handle something more formal.  (Right now, LA is reading Harry Potter books outloud and writing his own books).

We did and loved them.  In my opinion, the early grammar and vocab books are great for curling up on the couch and reading together.  There are fun little activities to do or discuss, but nothing that feels like an exercise.  The poetry books are great as well.  We didn't try the lower level writing books because they were available after we'd moved past that level, but I've heard good things.  If you want some practice exercises there are practice books available.

If I were moving from unschooly to a bit of curriculum, this would seem perfect.  We were moving from quite structured to something more unschooly and it was perfect for that for us. LOL  It is deep on concepts, full of love of language, light on repetition and boring exercises.

We are almost done with the Island series and love it! We do most of it on the couch, though we have fun analyzing the sentences in Practice Island together on the board (dh even enjoys doing them with us). I highly recommend MCT materials.

We like it too--this is our first year with it.  I must say I LOVE the poetry book.  We are using the Town level.  I use the poetry book with both my girls (2nd and 5th grade) and we get a lot from that.  I agree with others that it is perfect for couch learning.  The only one I am not thrilled with is the grammar town.  My dd didn't connect well with some of the stories that play with the language.  So, we ended up with me filtering that book and helping her internalize it.  We do the practice volumn now and refer back to the grammar if we need help.

You don't need both student and teacher editions though.  I should have just gotten the teacher books except for practice town--then I need both!
