Need ideas for history curriculum.

We're almost finished with my hack of history odyssey: ancients and I want to start writing up the next history curriculum. I'm basically going to rehash what we learned this year with different books, projects etc.

I need ideas and resources for the following (ancient) subjects;

Early People
Mesopotamia
Egypt
Greece

Ideas can be projects, books to read, videos to watch, games to play, whatever. I want a big list to choose from!

I'm not sure when we'll be doing this, it'll either be another another month or so or in the fall. She's 5 but she's gifted and can do work well beyond her grade level, if that helps with recommendations.

Thanks a bunch!

So far, we love "The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child." It is a narrative, chronological history that was recommended by my favorite Montessori curriculum guide "Children of the Universe" and it is very engaging. We have the activity book, too - and my daughter really enjoys the things they've presented as well as the further recommended reading/activities -- it has been a great jumping off point for finding books @ the library, and docus on netflix instant.

If you're not interested in Story of the World itself, you could purchase just the activity guide, as it has tons of activities in it, as well as additional recommended reading. I think it's even available as a download.

Some books we like are those in the Good Times Travel Agency series. They have books on the Ice Age (early people) Egypt, Greece, China, Rome, and others. We also like the Curious Kids' Guide to Egypt. Also, the You Wouldn't Want To Be A...series is fantastic and really fun.

We have Story of the World and use it for the History Odyssey curriculum. The activity guide is very similar to the HO one.

I will check out the Good Times Travel Agency books.

Thanks!

We don't use Story of the World texts or activity guides, but I do have the cds going in our car ALL the time, by my daughter's request. She can't get enough of them. She's listened to Volumes 1 and 2 at least 3-4 times each. We are on volume 3 now (the first pass through). In addition, I just supplement with LOTS of books from the library. There are so many, and whatever subject we are currently on, I just do a search on amazon for books and then when I find some I like, I order them from the library.

Also, I just ordered a bunch of magazines from Learningthroughhistory.com - I ordered two sets of their "packs" - one for American History and one for Modern European History. If we like them (we haven't received them yet), I plan to order the rest of their magazine packs.

The "You Wouldn't Want to be....." series are excellent. My daughter loves them (I think she's read most of them - there are so many!)

We love the magazines from Cobblestone publishing.  Our library has tons of back issues.  Calliope is World History, Cobblestone is American History, and Faces is Culture.  Here is a link to back issues of Calliope.  http://www.cobblestonepub.com/issue/cal#backissues
