Hospital birth around Crystal Lake, IL

I'm 28 weeks pregnant and was planning a homebirth, but because I'm taking an antidepressant, there are some potential risks to the baby that my midwife doesn't feel comfortable taking a chance on at home, which I completely understand and am totally on board with.

However, I now need to find a new provider!  The midwives I used for my 2 older kids are no longer in practice, so that's out.  I have a choice of 4 nearby hospitals - Centegra Woodstock, Centegra McHenry, Good Shephard in Barrington, and Sherman in Elgin.  Has anyone had a hospital birth at any of these, especially with a midwife?  Mind sharing your experience?

I could be mistaken, but of the hospitals listed I believe only Sherman and Centegra McHenry have midwives on staff. The CNMs out of Sherman practice is a group called Associates for Women's Healthcare in Elgin. The CNMs in McHenry work with this group: http://stankevychobgyn.com/index.htm.

Good Shepherd - Dr Dan Pesavento.  Yeah yeah, he's an OB.  But he's really a midwife in disguise.  *shhhh, don't tell anyone his secret*  ;)

The nurses can be rather mainstream - and some are pretty crunchy.  Luck of the draw.  But I will say that when my son had temperature issues both the nurse and neonatologist (sp?) on call insisted on skin to skin to correct, not heat lamps.  When he had to go to the NICU they were super supportive of breastfeeding and went way out of their way to make that happen.

But yeah, Dr Dan is the bestest.

Just to update - I met with Gretchen from Dr. Stankevych's office today and also went on a tour of L&D at Centegra McHenry.  LOVED both!  Gretchen was fantastic, and I've met Rebecca from when she used to be with Midwest.  They're the only ones who do the catching unless Dr. Stankevych is needed, which I was really happy to hear.  And the nurse that gave the tour made me feel like they're going to be totally cool with whatever I want as far as low/no interventions.

I delivered 9/20/09 at Sherman with midwife Glenda Embry. Love her!

Hi - I gave birth at the Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. I was with an OB practive for my prenatal care and so my delivery was with an OB. I felt very strongly about not wanting any interventions unless, of course, our lives were at stake. I ended up developing pre-eclampsia on the 37th week of my pregnancy. My OB sent me directly from my check up appointment (which was at 2pm) to the hospital to deliver. At the appointment I was already at 4 cm. Instead of going straight to the hospital, I went back to work to wrap up some things, then I went home, took a shower, finished packing my bag and got to the hospital only around 8pm. When I got to the hospital I was at 6cm. I needed an IV for medication to get my blood pressure down (this medication also ended up stopping my contractions - because they give the same medication to preterm labor patients to curb the labor as the pre-eclampsia patients. It's the safest one out there for the baby), so my natural contractions stopped. I was told I'll need pitosin to start them up again, so I asked if we could wait to see if the contractions will start on their own. I was given an ample amount of time (I ended up falling asleep at 11pm or so and woke up at 5am) and was rested up and ready to keep going to give birth to this baby :) My contractions have not started on their own so I agreed to pitosin and to the doctor breaking my water. My contractions picked up, labor progressed beautifully, and at 11:10am I was ready to push. At 11:29am my daughter (she is my first baby) was born :)

I was very happy with the whole experience even though I did have those few interventions. I know that if I did not have the hospital technologies at my disposal, everything may have turned out not as good for either myself or baby or both. All the horror stories I had read made the hospital sound scary, however, seems to me you can still have a low or no interventions birth at this hospital.
