Product name: Baby Bjorn
Brief description of product: a front-pack carrier for infants 8 lbs to 25 lbs
Store/Site of purchase:
Babies R Us
(purchased at local retail store)
Price: $89.99 (when I purchased mine in spring 2001, I paid approx. $80)
How long have you used this product? several months, when dd was under 4 months (8 lbs to 15 lbs)
Fit/Sizing: the fit is functional
The Baby Bjorn is similar in fit to a regular ol' school backpack. The baby's portion of the carrier can be modified in several ways, so a smaller infant will face towards the parent, and a larger infant can face outwards. For maximal comfort, it's important to have the cross where the over-the-shoulder straps meet lower on the back (rather than up high between the shoulders.)
Performance: acceptable, difficult to breastfeed with baby in carrier. The 3 inch wide straps do not distribute baby's weight as effectively as a sling or other baby carriers. Easy to put on and take off--but suprisingly, it does take quite a few tries to get it right, intially.
Workmomship: this high-quality carrier is factory-made. The color choices are cool, the carrier is machine washable.
Would you purchase this product again? no; I prefer a more 'cuddley' method of babywearing
Additional Comments:
This easy-to-find and common carrier is often a new parent's first introduction to babywearing. As a brand-new parent, I thought it was cool to wear my child, and it was easy to offer this backpack-like carrier to friends & family to allow them a turn at holding my baby.
However, this carrier ireminds me of a parachuter's jump harness, and I do not think it is as cuddley or versitle as an actual 'sling.'
The Baby Bjorn is a padded carrier; therefore, it is bulkier than a simpler fabric sling or carrier, which means it's cumbersome to stow in the diaper bag.
I give it (How many thumbs up out of five?) 3 thumbs
