We have been talking about getting one for a while, and I think it is going to finally happen tomorrow thanks to the dog getting sick on the playroom floor today.
I don't use chemicals in our home, so I'm wondering what we can use in a carpet cleaner that will be effective but not full of chemicals. Any suggestions?

I like Biokleen. Use it sparingly, it's really effective. I also through a drop or two of Bacout into the bottle. I have a cheapy $80 machine and oh boy! did I get a ton of dirt up. I attribute it to the cleaner I put in the machine.

Funny you mention the dog puking...I bought my carpet cleaner after my dog had the poops all over the living room. Gotta love pets, huh? LOL

I use a couple things. The first being boiling hot water- this alone will cut thru most anything. Second I have some stuff from the petstore made just for pets and that works well. I think its by Hoover and they have 4-5 different types, the bottle is black and each type has different color writing on it. On a rare occassion I will use some variation of mass produced carpet cleaning solution but then I need to go back and 'rinse' the carpet with hot water. I hate the thought of leaving 'soap' in the carpet.

Boiling hot water... definately the way to go.
Bacout may be good for getting rid of the smell. I've never had to remove any pet stains so I just fill the reservoir for the cleaning solution with half vinegar, half water, and about 1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of natural dish soap, depending on the size of the machine. I then go over again with just hot water.
