Help me help my baby through this cold/ fever. X Posted in Health and Healing

DS is 10 months old, breastfed. He has a fever of about 102. Started yesterday. He has a runny nose (clear) and a rattling cough (you can definitely hear the mucous in there). He's been nursing and sleeping all day but his nose is now starting to clog and it's making it almost impossible for him to nurse. Since he has a fever, I'm not sure about doing the steam room thing to clear the mucous- I don't want to make him even hotter. I've used the bulb sucker thing a few times.

He has two teeth coming in (one is through already) but I don't think this is related to that since they've been coming through for several weeks now and these symptoms have just started. Also, some of our friends have had the same symptoms and yuckiness.

I hate seeing my little baby in pain!

Please, give me your tips!

Try steaming up the bathroom and hanging out in there/in the shower with him to break up the mucous. If he can't breath through his nose at all try a suction trap.

We are in the same boat over here, but we have puking also. Bleh!

Nosefrida - seriously, it's the best.  I had DH run to Whole Foods one night to get one as DD was too stuffed up to nurse or sleep and it was such a help!  DD's not exactly a fan of the procedure, to say the least, but it really does the job.

Oh poor little guy...I hope he feels better soon!

A humidifier in the room where he sleeps will help keep that snot from getting all blocked up in his nose at night.

You could try expressing a little breastmilk onto your finger and rubbing it on his nose like right around his nostrils (if he will let you).

Oh, and DD's pediatrician recommended for me to drink chamomile tea when DD was feeling bad as a little one.  She said the soothing stuff in it will pass through into the milk and help DD feel better.

I use saline solution when DD has a bad stuffy nose.  It works almost immediately.

You could use a cool mist humidifier too.

Thanks for the responses! I'll have to dig out our humidifier from the closet. He just took a nice long nap and seems to be feeling a little better.

I give my kids herbal teas when they are sick.. chamomile, and nettle are a couple of our favs. Mint would help him "cool down". Tea helps.

I've also heard that vit. A can kick a fevers butt.. it has worked multiple times with my girls.. I give them cod liver oil w/ A.

Also, GARLIC.. it is a superpowered medicine that you can just get at your grocery store.. What I do is dice it up finely and swallow like pills with water. So it will go through the system and come out the breastmilk.

My kids have never had a really bad flu or needed antibiotics, so I think my remedies work. ;)
