First Dentist Appointment--help soothe my worries

Okay I know we probably should have had DS in to the dentist earlier, but it is what it is at this point...

So anyway, DS has his first dentis appointment today.  It's with the same practice I went to as a child, so I trust the dentist and the practice.  But I'm just nervous b/c DS is so difficult with teethbrushing.  I've tried every toothbrush/toothpaste on the shelf, and every game I can think of, and it frequently just comes down to me sitting on him trying to pry his mouth open :/  Needless to say, I'm not sure that we ever get a very thorough brushing.  So I'm not sure how willing he'll be to let the dentist do an exam... let alone the hygenist cleaning.  This is a pediatric office, though and I know they are probably pretty experienced with this sort of thing.  I know they have a cool set up at the office, so I'm sure that will help.  I just don't want this to be a taumatic experience for anyone.

So positive stories about first dentist trips would be really nice to read.  Especially positive experiences with kids who are easy with teeth brushing.

Not sure if our experience will help, since my guys have been overall not terrible about letting me brush their teeth. But they both were totally fine, better than fine, with the dentist the first time.  If they are used to kids then they will explain each thing before they do it, they'll introduce "Mister Thirsty" (they usually call it that) - the strange suction thing for getting the saliva., etc.  And they'll have prizes or stickers after.  That's good to know going in.   :)

My guys (4 and 6 now) are ok with me brushing at home, though were certainly not always totally cooperative at 3yo. At the dentist they were different, just opened when she said open, let her do what she needed to do. They sat on me, in the chair, which I think helps with feeling relaxed.       Good luck!!
