Meds question?

My twins just started sleeping thru the nite and I am starting to have serious insomnia problems :( I've had really severe "episodes" of insomnia on and off for years. Sometimes I can take ambien for a few weeks and then be fine, other times the only thing that helps is a couple of months on Lexapro. I've tried ambien for a few days now (and pumped and dumped milk overnite) but so far things dont seem to be getting better. I'd like to keep breastfeeding for a year or so - my girls are 4.5 months now -  but need to weigh the pros and cons of Lexapro and breastfeeding. My first question is... has anyone else breastfed while on Lexapro? And also what doc do I turn to to discuss this .... OB/midwife? Primary? Pediatrician?

While I appreiciate any other advice or ideas I think over the years I tried most of the "natural" solutions out there without any luck. I have tried accupuncture and hypnosis and I do yoga as regularly as I can with 3 small kids. I take extra calcium and magnesium and drink lots of chamomile tea. I've tried Rescue Remedy (and while not pregnant or BF I've tried Valerian and Melatonin). I wont sleep when I'm tired enough ...  I tested that theory a few times while pregnant with the twins and went  up to 3 days without sleeping for one minute (while working, writing a thesis and caring for a one year old) before taking any medications. I went to 2 therapists who both agreed I had no deep issues or anxieties to resolve...while some minor stressor might kick of my insomnia epsiodes the only issue keeping me awake was my anxiety over the insomnia. I know Zoloft if the drug of choice but it gives me insomnia!

Thanks!

Very sorry about this, I have insomnia occasionally and I know how hellish it can be. What I use for it is a very good antihistimen that as a side effect knocks me out cold. Maybe something like that would still work and be better on leaving your system or being less harmful. I do not know about the good of bad of any of the drugs mentioned, so I just offer this outside the box suggestion to have as an option when talking to a doctor.

Thanks for the suggestion. The usual antihistamines don't do much for me in terms of sleep. I get drowsier but remain awake, tho I know they work for a lot of folks. I asked my primary and he thinks I should stop BF 'ing if I decide I need to go back on the Lexapro :(
