Stomach Flu and medication

Thread Starter

I have some sort of stomach bug, and stupidly took several doses of Pepto Bismol tablets without first checking if it was safe (and of course it's not recommended).  I've probably take 2-3 doses over the last 36 hours, so not much.

I have a 4 week old and am looking for some reassurance because now I'm worried.

i think the issue with aspirin (the salicylate in pepto) is Reyes Syndrome, which seems to be associated with viral illness too. have you checked Hale's forum?

I just rechecked it (had to check out the old forum instead of new).

The only thing I found there was a question regarding someone who was on a course of Pepto for 14 days!  And he says the risk is remote, and that usually Reyes occurs in older children and is most closely associated with Chicken Pox.

I'm not going to take anymore regardless of how I am feeling, but does this make it sound like I have nothing to worry about?

if i were in that situation i'd stop taking it and i would keep breastfeeding and not worry. there's not much outside chemotherapy and radioactive treatments that would keep me from breastfeeding. ;)

Hope you feel better soon!

Reyes Syndrome is mostly associated with chicken pox and true influenza. The risk is slight, although it is very real-- I had a good friend in the fifth grade who died of this, after being given aspirin during flu. But I wouldn't stop breastfeeding a newborn over it, unless baby was clearly infected with pox or true flu. Live and learn, I say.
