yo baby

Thread Starter

hi ya'll,

anyone familiar with yo baby yogurt?  thoughts/opinions/experiences with it?

DS is 7 m/o and isnt gaining weight as well as he was in the beginning.  dr is slightly concerned and mentioned this product to help with protein intake and also that the probiotics were a good idea for his gi system.  LO was EBF until about a month or so ago when we introduced solids (stage 1 foods).  he is now moving onto stage 2 foods and we give him some avocado (to help with fat intake) everyday with dinner.

i'm sure the weight thing will correct itself and we'll see him gain weight soon, but wanted any info you fellow parents had on the yogurt thing.  thanks so much!

i think yogurt is a great food for babies once they are eating solids. however, yobaby has sugar as the second ingredient plus it is real expensive.

i would either 1. buy organic whole milk and make yogurt. you could add in mashed up fruit for flavor or jam made without sugar, or just serve plain. 2. buy organic whole milk yogurt and serve that to the baby, with or without fruit as mentioned before.

This.  We bought plain organic full fat yogurt for DD1 when she started yogurt and mixed in fruit (applesauce, blackberries, blueberries are favs).  Now we alternate between doing that and making our own in the crockpot.    She actualy doesn't like yogurt with sugar already added in even though she has a monster sweet tooth.

I buy it for my underweight kiddos since it's some of the only whole milk yogurt I can find. The rest of our diet is low sugar so it doesn't bother me a whole lot.

The apple flavor is pretty good. redface.gif

Also you may want to check your LO's weight on the WHO breastfed baby charts.  The weight gain may not be as much an issue as your dr believes if s/he is using the charts provided by formula companies.  It's not unusual for breastfed babies' weight gain to slow around the time they become mobile, which is right around the age your LO is.

I love stonyfield farm yogurt products.  Their website has different coupons every month, and also a rewards program that you can trade in points for free products.  If you have a Wegmans near you, they double the coupons.  I'm not crazy about the sugar, but my DS loves the yogurt and it really is his one 'sweet' thing that he eats.  So, it doesn't bother me.  They do have plain that you could add sweetner if you wanted, or some of the flavors are lower in sugar than others.

Also, they have the 3-1 meals, including a grain and fruit/veggie puree.  I bought some last night for DS that was peach and squash and he LOVED it!

I HATE YoBaby. I really enjoy Stonyfield Farms yogurt, and it upsets me that they market something to babies that is full of sugar and extra cost.

I've found that my kids like plain whole milk yogurt just fine on it's own when they're little. Up until they're introduced to the sweetened kind, anyways. And I agree with the person who mentioned mixing in mashed/pureed fruit if they want more flavor/sweetness. My older kids do plain yogurt with a bit of vanilla and a drizzle of honey. I'd give them a Stonyfield Farms whole milk sweet flavor as a dessert without hesitation, but not for a baby/toddler just developing its tastes.

Me too! Plus yo baby comes in #7 plastic, which is the really bad kind.

My kid was pretty meh on yogurt 'till I finally figured out how to make it at home. Its pretty easy and super yummy. I use whole, non-homogenized milk because I consider other kinds of milk to basically be processed food...

We mix with fruit and homemade jam. Its waaaaaaay cheaper than yobaby.

you can get plain yo baby yogurt, FYI. but it is expensive. The only thing that makes yo baby "baby friendly" is that it's organic and whole milk...hard to find in the regular grocery store. I do buy it for my 2 year old DS but only with coupons. It's very easy to make though too!

Agreed with all that was said about sugar. I was shocked by how much is in it. I buy large containers of plain, whole milk yogurt, and then it can serve multiple uses: mixed with applesauce for DH or the baby, mixed with jam and maple syrup for DD5, walnuts or maple syrup for me, or as a base for tzakziki.

Yes to this. It is normal for a breastfed baby to slow down at this age.

At 7 months, your baby should only be eating food for flavors and fun, not as a source of calories. The caloric intake should still be coming from breastmilk.

Personally, I would not give a baby any amount of sugar.

We gave E whole milk Greek Yogurt and she LOVES it! there's no reason to assume that your child won't like the tart flavor of plain yogurt until you try.

Oh, and I HATE yobaby as well!

i agree. We use the Stonyfield Farm plain whole fat yogurt. Both of my girls love it plain. My 6 YO still loves plain yogurt. No need to sweeten it at all. Sometimes we mash banana in there for a treat. For a while, when she was about 3 or 4, I let her eat the fruit flavored yobaby, but we have moved on to greek yogurt for my older one these days.

I've never seen whole fat greek yogurt. Wish I could find that.
