8 Month Old Burnt his Fingertips (Blisters)

He's doing so-so, about 2 hours later, but I'm looking for additional suggestions.  Little man touched the glass on the gas fireplace, and three fingertips have little blisters.

He didn't like my holding his hand under cold water, but was Ok with my giving him a bowl of it to splash in after he calmed down some.

I got some Herb Pharm Trauma Oil onto it (St. John's Wort, Arnica, Calendula ... it has helped with my burns, and my midwife OKed it when he was born for his umbilicus, Vitamin K & PKU owies, etc ...).

I also gave him both Tylenol and Advil, per our doc's RX for maximum pain relief.  And I put Anbesol on the fingertip to help him calm down.

We don't have lavender in the house, and live in an area that is so anti-natural that we can't get any.

I won't put Aloe on it, since the active item is Aloe (salicylic acid) is too close a relative to aspirin (acetosalicylic acid), and aside from the usual infant-aspirin concern, I'm allergic to salicylates in all forms.

My biggest concern right now is how to avoid popping the blisters, and to avoid infection once he inevitably does pop them?  Is there a bandaging technique anyone has found that is especially durable?  It's mostly his middle two fingers.  He's doing OK just now playing with them, just a little fussy.

Poor little guy!

Have you considered silver spray or manuka honey for the blisters? The silver would help protect against infection (it's what I used when I had an unfortunate incident with my cooktop burner - major blisters, it worked great, no infection). So would the honey, actually, and it will also aid in healing.

http://www.prlog.org/10071086-using-manuka-honey-to-treat-burns.html:

Manuka Honey's antibacterial activity protects the burn from becoming infected.  It also has the ability to repair damaged skin and regenerate new tissue.  Manuka Honey also contains anti-inflammatory properties which helps in reducing the pain associated with burns.

Hope he's feeling better real soon!

Poor guy! My DS went through the same thing--also at 8 months old. We went out for pizza on Mother's Day and the server set a piping hot pizza down right in front of DS. Before any of us had time to realize it, he stuck his hands in the hot cheese & sauce. It was awful--he had second degree burns on four fingers, and first degree on others.

Anyway, we did not bandage him at all (per the ped's advice.) Too hard to keep bandages on. What we ended up doing was applying neosporin very liberally and then putting cotton socks over his hands (our own decision) to keep them clean. He did very well tolerating this, and we continued to cover with socks until there were no open wounds.

Good luck--hope he heals quickly.

Yeah, I think we'll try the socks too.  I wanted to use bandages to keep the blisters intact as long as possible, but now the bandages are just something to chew on.

I'll try to find silver spray, thanks for that suggestion.  I'm most concerned about infection once the blisters open up!
