pain after (non-vax) injection

DD(4) has scarlet fever. She had to get a bicillin shot yesterday, and today she's complaining of enormous pain at the injection site. She's screaming anytime one of us brushes against it, and she refuses to put any weight on that leg. I read that it can cause pain, but I'm wondering if there's something more going on. She's not prone to dramatics, and she definitely has tears with any touch of the area. Should I take her back to the dr?

When I was a kid, my family doc would give antibiotic shots for strep. No joke, they would leave massive bruises and get quite sore. I would say it's somewhat normal for your dd to be in pain from the injection. However, if you're concerned, it will not hurt to follow up with the doc to make sure this is normal.

I've been reading up on it, and apparently it's pretty normal. On the Dr. Sears website, they actually say that if you think daily oral antibiotics are problematic that you should request a shot. Not after this experience! She seriously starts crying if she forgets and tries to stand up on it!

To be fair, we didn't have much choice. It was this or the hospital for IV fluids, but I still wish they'd at least warned me that it could be this painful.
