Question about after 2nd parent adoption

Thread Starter

So, for those of you who have done the 2nd parent adoption... When you travel do you bring the baby's birth certificate with both of your names on it? Or do you carry around the adoption decree? Have you ever been in a situation where you needed more than the birth certificate with both of your names on it?

We're Canadian with two adopted kids (the baby on the way will also be adopted by my DW). We always travel with our marriage certificate, adoption papers and passports.  We've always had questions when leaving the country and it's been prudent to have copies of the adoption papers (I don't think parental names are on short form birth certificates here, but since we were leaving the country, we always needed the passport and parental names do not appear on those).

It's required that both parents consent to having a kid leave the country and you would be required to produce a note from the father - you know, given the heterosexism of the system that kids can't have two moms or dads.  We always have to explain that we're not friends, that we're married, and these are our adopted children.  We've always had to give an explanation, but we've never had an issue.

I'm more comfortable including the adoption decree in our travel documents...just in case.

ETA:  We've only traveled internationally and not domestically with our kids.

We have 2 girls adopted using a 2nd parent adoption. We travel a lot both domestically and internationally and we only bring passports (we do have a marriage license and adoption paperwork, but they never leave the house). We have never had an issue (in fact, no one has ever asked), and no one has ever questioned us even when dealing with hospitals out of state. Maybe they assume we are sisters and are each traveling with our own children....who knows, but I have never worried about it!
