Nurse in. Could it ruin my supply if it didn't work?

DS3 is seeing a doctor about a posterior TT tommorrow.  If he does better after the procedure I'm considering doing a nurse in with him.  My parents are wanting the older 2 boys to sleep over on Friday so I'd have all day/night to just sit and nurse.

How would I do this?  Just latch him on constantly?  If I don't pump and he isn't more efficient will my supply tank?  Would I pump some?  I want to have milk in there for him.

He nurses only with a nipple sheild right now.  He gets milk out but not enough.  Right now he still downs his supplements.  But he CAN latch and nurse and I want to get him nursing.

I'm just not sure if that would be a good idea or not?  Any input?

By "nurse in," do you mean spending a day (or more) devoted to nursing? What I've seen described is basically taking baby to bed with you. Undress baby down to a diaper and yourself from the waist up so you have lots of skin-to-skin contact, and feed baby on demand. You can certainly try to latch him on more often, though one of the ideas is that the extra skin-to-skin and the availability of the breasts will cue more interest in the baby. Check out videos of the "breastfeeding crawl" for an idea of a position to try. Of course, side-lying and cradle/football holds are great, too. Be sure to have lots of water for you!

I'm not familiar with your story, so there may be information I'm missing. However, I don't see any reason why this would have a negative impact on your supply. I think it's a great idea for working on latch after a frenectomy. My DD's posterior tie was just clipped and I wish I'd had the time to spend on it with her, too.

All the best!

A nurse in sounds like a great idea for your situation! As PP said, having baby laying skin-to-skin on your chest is a great place to start. If he shows interest in nursing and starts rooting for your nipple then just help him along.  If you do get engorged then try expressing just enough milk to get comfortable again. Let us know how it goes!

Thank you :)

I should update.  I actually didn't even need to do a nurse in really.  When his tongue tie was clipped he was willing to latch on.  The evening after it was done was a little stressful, but after that he started nursing consistently.  It's been a week and he does not need the supplements anymore.  My next step is to wean off the sheild, but since he's doing great I am going to let my nipples finish healing first.

Anyway...long story short...I am so glad we toughed it out and so thankful that we were able to have the TT fixed.  He's nursing!!!!!!!
