Books for newly turned 6yo?

Thread Starter

Our dd has recently really taken off with reading.  She read The Little House in the Big Woods yesterday in about four hours.  She wakes up early and reads until the rest of us get up, and then reads during our "quiet time" in the afternoon.  So, she is reading about a book a day, and I'm running out of ideas.

She is a pretty sensitive child, though I think it's a good thing for little bits of harder topics to be introduced here and there.  Today we talked about women's rights...she thought it was awful that little girls used to have to sit still ALL the time and weren't allowed to play rough like boys.

Anyway, what suggestions do you have?  (And if there is something touchy in them, please give me a heads-up if you can.)

Thanks!

I can tell you what my dd (also 6yo) likes to read, but I warn you it's not high literature or anything, lol!  She's been making her way through the Junie B. Jones series and the Magic Treehouse series.  She also enjoys Garfield comics.  Oh yeah, and she just started "Clementine" and is liking it.  There's nothing particularly touchy in any of them, and none of them tackles any deep topics, but they do keep dd's interest.  I think that's pretty much it for what she's been reading in English for the past while (she goes to school in French and so also has been reading some books in French).

At around that age I loved the Narnia series - maybe your dd would like that too?  I put mine in storage a long time ago and have been meaning to bring them out for my dd...

I remember some of these as a kid, and I remember not liking them at all.  (Mrs Piggle Wiggle & Stone fox)

But, my daughter liked "secret school" "Winnie Dancing on her own" and anything "Junie B Jones".  We still bought Junie B Jones books for years!  I think she was about 14 before she stopped reading those.  LOL.

Check out the Ivy & Bean series. It's perfect for a girl this age. It's about two 7 yr old girls who live on the same cul-de-sac and become friends and get in all sorts of mild adventures. They're slim, but chapter books. Maybe 100 pages?

If she'd like something meatier, I'd recommend The Penderwicks series and there's a new one of them coming out this summer. It's a contemporary book with an old fashioned feel about 4 sisters. There is a mention of how the mom died of cancer prior to the start of the action of the book, but I think that's one of those things that is harder for parents to read than it is for kids. Very well written. My kids loved 'em.

Another rec for Ivy and Bean. DD (5.5) has read the first one and is onto the second. They're silly but age apporopriate (so far...). DD also loved Enid Blyton (yuck!) and Laura Ingalls, though she didn't read that as independently. Chronicles of Narnia might be good; maybe Roald Dahl? I remember loving James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc.

Oh yes, I forgot those!  Dd and I read them together (at the time they were a beyond her reading level).  She loved both of those.  (Though be prepared for some - not exactly scary - but "tense" moments).

Ivy and Bean is a great little series, dd (also 6) loved them.

Other series she's liked:

The World According to Humphrey and following books (there are 6 of them in the series). A really cute story about a classroom hamster.

Animal Ark (there are a ton of books in this series)

Main Street series by Ann Martin (these aren't scary, but they do have some more mature issues -- the main characters in the book lost their parents in a car accident, one of the girls has an alcoholic father; dd is very sensitive yet she LOVED these books.)

I second the Clementine books

A very easy, predictable series that dd loved for a few months was the Rainbow Magic series. They're complete pap in terms of story line and writing, but they're really popular.

Cam Jansen (easy, but cute)

Magic School Bus Chapter Books

She may like the Allie Finkle books, my dd started them at that age and loved them.  Clementine is a favorite among many kids that age as are the American Girl books, though she is a little young for them and some of them may be too traumatic for her if she is very sensitive.  The Magic Kitten series is popular among some of the kids at dd's school.  My dd really likes the Bella Sera books but I am not sure what they are about or how scary they get.  Ivy and Bean was fun but it had some stuff about blood sharing that I didn't want my dd introduced to at that age because she often liked to test things out for herself when she read about them and I didn't want to risk her testing blood sharing out.  My dd loves the Clarice Bean books right now but she is two years older.

When I was 6, I really liked the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary.

Sounds like it's time for a library card.  If she is reading them that fast she could easily pick up three books, and return them mid week and get three more.  They will have loads of great suggestions and be able to order books she really likes.

Roald Dahl is perfect, I loved Harriet the Spy, Choose your own adventure books are good, and they can be re-read a dozen different ways.  I loved Shel Silverstein's poetry at that age.  I think I was about that age when I got a set of Where the Sidewalk Ends and Light on in the Attic.  I read and re-read them dozens and dozens of times.

She may also want to try writing her own stories soon, too.

At that age I loved the "All of a Kind Family" series by Sydney Taylor.

The Oz series is really good- my favorite was Ozma of Oz.

Roald Dahl and Shel Silverstien are good recs too.

"B" is for Betsy is a great series by Carolyn Haywood.  Written in the 1930's ... mild, really gets into the "big" little adventures of that age such as first day of kindergarten, a new teacher, school fair, the nice crossing guard, the holidays, a little sister etc.

I used to LOVE all of the Betsy books. I had my mom's from when she was a kid but I think they disappeared.

DS is 6 1/2 and loves the Geronimo Stilton books.
