what are the signs to look for that a child needs speech therapy?
Â
dd2 has beckwith-wiedemann syndrome and has a large tongue. Â it's taking us a while to get in with the doctors so i need to be on top of this.

i was debating if i should wait for dd's appt with the geneticist this july. Â one ped gave dx, then we moved and current ped knows something is different but wants more testing before giving a dx.
Â
just don't know if one can do preventive therapy, dd is only 13m so still young for talking. Â her babbling seems like other kids.
Early Intervention services can come assess your child -- at 1, it's more than babbling, they'll also look for things like joint attention (can she follow your pointing or eye gaze) and intentional communication (non-verbal). Most verbal behaviors are preceded by non-verbal versions of the same thing. For example, does she gesture a request (hold her arms up for 'up') or refusal (shake her head, push things away). Does she point to things? Direct your attention to things? The EI services are free, and it might give you peace of mind.

The worst they can say is that there is nothing they can do right now, but there may be pre-speech exercises that would be helpful now.
