Language Development and 14 month old?

I'm curious to know how many words my 14 month old should know.

Right now he says, "Yeah", "No", "Mama", "Dada", "Go", "Bye bye". He's due to have another well baby visit next month. I know they're going to ask me  how many words besides "Mama" and "Dada" he knows. It makes me nervous because my oldest son has a speech delay and was diagnosed with Autism/PDD-NOS a week ago. I keep looking out for the same thing with my 14 month old.

Many typical children don't have words until they are 18+ months old. I would say that especially for a boy your child is above average in language. How is his comprehension of what you say? I understand why you are anxious and I think it is totally normal to feel that way.

My son's pediatrician told us at his 1 year appointment that the average 15 month old boy has 5 words.  So it sounds like he's right on target to me!

Thanks ladies! :)

He understands things pretty well.

He understands when we ask him to "Come here" "Come see ..." "Up" "Hungry?" (he'll climb up in his high chair if he's hungry). "Kiss?" "Hug?" "I'ma getcha!" (he'll run away and giggle when I tell him I'm going to get him!) "No!" "Time for a nap!" (He'll whine and protest when put in his crib/fall asleep on his own).

Yup! Sounds quite "normal" for that age. :) My 15mo can say Hi, bye, Mama, Dada, car, kitty cat, all done, baba (for bottle) and Nana, but she understands so much more and she has a few signs she uses too, so even though she is stingy with her talking, I'm not worried at all. At this age they are learning so much that sometimes they will even "regress" a bit in their language development as they learn to fine tune their walking and other gross motor skills. Between 18-24m you'll probably see a language explosion.
