My DS was just dx with ASD. I am wondering if there is a good site to go to that will explain to me the laws and rights for him. We are in a big battle with the school trying to get him evaluated for IEP. We live in GA if they differ by state.

Also, try googling "special education advocate yourcity", it sounds like you need one. Have you sent a written request (certified mail) requesting an IEP meeting? You want as much in writing as possible and keep a log of phone calls and people talked to regarding this.

Have you requested an IEP in writing (real letter with a date and signature) with a copy of his medical dx attached to it?

So I spent all night going over the laws and reading everything i can. I have kept track of meetings with teacher and principal. I sent in a formal letter today with DS attached diagnosis from the Dr. and spoke again with the teacher. She stated that she would be sending home a letter today with a time and date that her, I and the principal can all have a meeting. This is all very new to me and I am already tired of feeling like i am getting the run around. Does someone have a sample of an IEP (i know every childs is written differently) that i can look at so I know what to expect and what to ask for. Or if there is a website that might have some IEP samples or how to write one. I want to go in to this meeting full of knowledge so I don't get pushed around. TIA

Could you give a little more backround on what the school has done so far? Has he gone through the school evaluations yet or is this meeting to determine what school evaluations he needs to have?

I have been fighting since January 19th to get the school to start a meeting with the SST advocate and begin his paperwork to get the IEP started. Still nothing. We now have a final and formal dx from the developmental ped so now I have submitted everything.

thanks for the sample sites exactly what i wanted to look at prior to our meeting.

Grrr! I agree! You definately need an advocate. I'm sorry they are making things so difficult. What they are doing is illegal. If you bring in an advocate, hopefully the school will get into gear and your ds will get the services he needs. hug.gif

so today we have gotten leaps and bounds. Making LOTS of calls and taking paperwork around to everyone and letting everyone know I MEAN business. I now have a meeting with the SST team tomorrow at noon. Hopefully it is a lot easier from here on out.
