I've been so hungry the past two days! I don't remember this coming up this early with my first. Is it just in my head?
I don't know if I'm hungrier, but definitely hungry for different food. For whatever reason my body really wants protein. Usually I really love bread and carbs but right now they don't appeal to me at all. Over the weekend I baked some chicken thighs and I have them in the fridge to eat for lunches this week - yum!
Remember ladies: we aren't supposed to be dieting! If you want carbs, eat them. Eat protein that sounds good with them to maintain blood sugar, but remember that your body needs 195 carbs a day if you're DIABETIC and even more if you're not. It's most important to space them (the diabetic pattern is 45, 15, 60, 15, 45, 15--then varies by individual blood sugar reactions) Pregnant women need around 150g-180g of protein a day for good placental healthy.
Also, water--drink a bunch of water every time you think you're hungry. If you're still hungry, eat. Thirst sometimes feels like hunger, especially in pregnancy when we need more water than usual to accommodate the increasing blood volume in our bodies.
Of course, I'm coming as someone who's followed my bodies cues and never gained weight during pregnancy (I lost during my first) so I'm obviously starting out heavy :( but these are the dietary recommendations for a woman of any weight during pregnancy. Find the healthiest option for what your body is craving (such as fruit for carbs, nuts or lean meat for protein). Dark chocolate with a high cacao count is supposed to help decrease the overall risk of pre-E, etc. so having a piece a day is good for you, too ;) (it also strengthens tooth enamel and improves cardiac function... it's been labeled a superfood recently).
Try not to feel bad about what your body is craving. Oh, and toss out any gender associations. With my first, I was all over fruits and girly things--had a girl. With my second, it was meats and boy things... had another girl ;) who happens to be a huge meat lover.
Now it's been fish. Normally I can eat fish maybe once a week, then I'm sick of it (not good w/a freezer full of salmon & halibut!) but lately I want fish all the time. Salmon for dinner on Monday, tuna for lunch on Tuesday, salmon patties for dinner on Tuesday... and this morning I really was wishing I'd saved some salmon patties for breakfast! I'm not worried about the mercury in the fish thing - salmon & tuna are low-mercury fish anyhow and I know that MS will likely come soon and put an end to my fish frenzy!
I ate two big salads for lunch today - spring lettuce with these crusted, spicy tilapia filets (2 filets on each salad). I had one salad at 12:30 and another at 2:30. And I wanted another an hour later but made myself stop so I would be able to eat dinner. Even writing this right now I'm thinking about those tilapia filets in the freezer. And normally I'm really not a big fish eater.
