far too frequent night wakings

Baby was waking very frequently due to colic symptoms, oversupply issues, and possibly because of being born two weeks early.  Now baby is six months old, and wants to continue nursing very frequently at night.  He still has had some gas pains etc., but is certainly capable of sleeping more that what he has been (two hours was the maximum).  He wasn't content just to be in the bed with me, but wanted to be picked up.
After six months I am very much needing him to sleep some longer stretches, and don't want to let him cry for extended lengths.  I would consider a peaceful way to sleep train him that won't cause me to lose any more sleep than I already have.

What do other mothers do who have babies that wake so frequently?

Have you considered that something in your diet might be causing his colic symptoms and gas pains?  Dairy is a big culprit. You could try eliminating it from your diet for 2 wks and see if that improves your baby's sleep.  Is he getting enough to eat during the day? If he's not nursing frequently, he could be trying to make up calories at night.

I didnt have a premature baby..but I do know when I was night weaning it got worse before it got better. I started cutting out specific nightly feedings one at a time. And she would cry for boobie but evetually she realized she wasnt going to get it and stopped waking up.
