not sure where to post this and i know it's been asked before...my now 3 month old pooped after every feeding when he was a newborn, up to about 8 weeks old, now he goes about once/week-10 days.  i've googled this question and come up w/mixed answers from 'this is completely normal' to 'call the pedi'

what do you think?

thanks ladies!

It is completely normal. DS does about 10 days between poops too and has since he was a few months old. As long as your baby doesn't seem uncomfortable it's fine. Breastmilk is so easily digestible that there isn't much left for them to poop out!

It's really true!  DS gets a little formula at daycare and poops every day there.  Before he started solids he never pooped on the weekend, when he only gets breast milk.  In fact, over x-mas he was home for 6 days and got only breastmilk and he didn't poop for the whole 6 days!  I used to tease his teacher that he saves it up just for her... I think I went a whole month without changing a poopy diaper.

I would say that it is usually completely normal. Just watch for signs that his tummy hurts him. If it does seem that way, I would talk to your ped. Otherwise, totally normal! smile.gif

As long as when the poop appears it is soft and there is no blood then all is good. It is extremely uncommon for breastfed babies to get constipated (hard, pellet like poop.)

I will just add another "normal" to the list - the longest my DS has gone is 13 days (which was a record for our pedi). The first time this happened, we took him to the doctor after he had not pooped for about a week, and she checked him out but ultimately said that is just what happens with some breasfed babies and not to worry. But to reiterate what others are saying, DS always seemed to be his normal self when he went a long time between poops, and his poops were totally normal when they came. If there had been a significant change is his behavior or other signs of illness, then I would have gone to the doctor.

Wow!  Total relief for me too!  I came on here planning to post a similar question myself except it's only been a day and a half for my 5 month old.  My older son was not like this so it was a little concerning to me.  His new patern seems to be only once a day or once every other day.  He too seems his happy self, no blood, normal poo when he does.  Thanks from me too for all these responses!

Yes this would be something to start bragging about - my EBF  LO was going 2 -3 times a day at that age, although i had read all about how normal it would be for him to go a whole week without pooping!  Breastmilk IS such  perfect food - it all gets used, no waste, literally!
