cities/towns/communities where there is very progressive, emergent, demo, alternative edu?

can any of you recommend any places in the u.s. where there is a stong community for this? i'm finding myself very disappointed w/ the town i live in...there are a few options but very few and far between. i want to be around a strong, like-hearted bunch...a big bunch if i can find you! ;o)

how about in mexico/central or south america?

I live in austin tx. here there is a variety of schooling options including a gtrong homeschooling (even unschooling) crowd and a sudbury school (clearview sudbury school).however I wouldn't go as far as to say that the overall community is loving the idea of alturnitive school. Austin is pretty affordable compared to much of the country. it is so much more liberal than texas as a whole. it is a nice place to live.

Tell me more about austin....are you a transplant? Native? Also, I am a child-led, play-based preschool teacher...do you know of any play schools in austin? I also just posted a thread asking about climate.......would love your input!
