need help determining how much to get for meat CSA

We finally found a great CSA near us. The meat is either 10lbs a month, $80 or 20lbs a month, $155. It is a mix of chicken, lamb, pork and beef.

It is only DH, DD and I. I was thinking 10lbs seemed reasonable, but aren't chickens a good 4lbs? They come whole. Do you think the 10lbs will be enough for us?

anyone?

I would for sure do 20lbs a month. Chickens can be 3-5 lbs...

How often do you eat meat and how much do you eat?

I can tell you that I try to eat meat every day and sometimes entertain or cook for friends, so I'd probably get the 10 lbs for myself if I didn't want much leftovers and 20 if I wanted to build up a freezer stash... but that's because my dh and kids are vegetarian.

Our CSA share is 24 lbs, and ive discovered that now that i have to remember to defrost it, we're actually eating less meat. My freezer is filling up.

And yes, a single chicken can be 5 lbs, as can a single roast. I would go w the 20 lbs and then if you need to adjust later, do. Just make sure you have the freezer space (24 lbs fills a file box).

Dang - no wonder we spend so much on food compared to everyone else! We eat about 65-75 lbs of meat a month for our family of 3, we eat meat at every meal every day. We can't eat eggs (intolerant), dairy, or grains, though.
