Blow Outs--everyday.....

Help!

My 8 month old DD blows out her diapers everyday--I thought things would improve when we introduced solids but it hasn't.  I need to send at least 1 change of clothing each day to daycare.  We currently use prefolds snappi's with a variety over covers--bummis super whisper, bummis origional, imse vimse and thirsties.  What can I do?  I have heard about Dappi pull on covers--would these help?  I know that the Kissaluvs are great for keeping poop in but I would prefer not to have to buy more diapers when I already have a ton of prefolds.

Thanks in advance for your help!

What that usually meant for DD was that we needed to go up a size in cover.  We also used prefolds and covers, but only Thirsties covers.

Alternatively, if you've just gone up a size in covers, have you tried folding the prefold the other way so that it is longer and narrower?  I wonder if that would help contain things if she is blowing out the back.

Well, are they using the Snappis correctly?

If so, then size up in covers.

Yes, I believe we are snappi'ing correctly.  She only weights 20lbs and we are already in mediums which should be good upto 28lbs--are you all still thinking that I need to size up?

We recently had her in paper diapers for a few weeks because DCP broke her hand and that was easier and she was blowing out of those in the back and the legs. Oy.

Oh, we are already doing them the "long way" and it hasn't seemed to help.

What fold are they using?  It can really make a difference.  For us, the only one to contain was jelly roll, but you have to be sure to get the rolls into the crease (smallest diameter area) between groin and thigh and it has to be snug all the way around the thigh, with no room to gap when it's snappi'd.  I basically have to snappi every pf twice in order to get it on "perfectly", and even then I still have the occasional blow out.

And if the cover fits correctly, the poo should be contained within it, if it escapes the dipe.  The leg elastic should be snug, and the back elastic should be touching skin, not diaper.  It should also be snug.  Any gapping with movement allows for poo to escape.

As for solids, it really depends on what she's eating and how much.  If she's eating purees, you're not going to see a whole lot of difference, and if she's eating only small amounts of finger food, again, not much difference.  But at 17 mos, my guy eats usually 2 apples a day to start, and trust me, you can see the difference (since it comes out much the same as it went in - in chunks).

Our son is 9 months, 20 pounds.  He poops about once every 6 days, so it's a big one.  Blowouts were a major issue.

We use flat diapers, pad folded (no Snappi!) in a Flip cover.  Zero escapes from the diaper cover.

We never, never found a way to fold and fasten them that kept the poo in the diaper, so pad folding without a fastener has made our lives easier on many levels.

We tried many other covers (G Diaper, Thirsties, Imse Vimse Wool to name a few).  Flip (with snaps) was recommended highly and has worked beautifully.  Being able to adjust the fit of the legs and waist independently (because there are 2 rows of snaps) did the trick.

Are your prefolds long enough that you can fold down the back as a sort of poo-containment device? If not maybe try this with a larger size of prefold...it worked pretty well for us (even while in the hospital after they gave poor DS an enema).

Is your problem just back blow outs or is it coming out the legs too? Does it happen when she is with you or just with the daycare providers?
