Is that all there is to a swim diaper?

I recently bought an Imse Vimse swim diaper. I'm not confused, right? I'm NOT supposed to put a prefold or fitted or anything with it am I? It just seems so thin. Two layers...? Is that supposed to hold urine and runny breastmilk poo in?

I think I'll order one of several different kinds of swim diapers to find what I like best, but which is your favorite? I plan on going to the membership only pool several times a week so I figure I need about four.

Nope, no insert. I don't think it's supposed to hold in urine - the chlorine in the pool will neutralize it. But it should hold in the poo. I haven't tried Imse Vimse (is that the cutest name ever, or what?), but I've heard a lot of moms swear by using a bum genius pocket without an insert.

We've got our first swim planned for this week, we're gonna go the BG route.

Nope, they are basically just a cover.  No absorbency.  You could slip a PF in for on the way to the pool, but you don't need it in the pool.  It's logical if you think about it, how can you keep pee in but pool water out? ;)  They're just to catch the poo.

I used a Bummis Whisper Wrap cover in the pool on my DD for the whole time she was in diapers.  If you use a regular diaper (like BG or a cover) just make sure you don't keep it in your normal diaper rotation.  The chlorine wrecks it for regular diaper use, but it's perfect for the pool!

We have a few Wee Waves from Target which I like but we also just use a pocket diapers without the insert. You don't want absorbency because that would soak up water and weigh the baby down.

a swim diaper should not be absorbent. if it was it would absorb pool water and weigh the baby down. it's just for poop containment, an as long as you have a good fit around the legs it will do that. I always have DD wear a regular diaper to the pool and then put the swim diaper on right before going in.

I use an old, practically useless pocket diaper as a swim diaper. This eliminated the need to buy an expensive swim diaper (or having to constantly buy disposable swim diapers). I don't stuff the diaper with anything, because as other posters said, you don't want it to be absorbent; it just needs to be able to catch a poo should one happen.

I used pockets with out inserts, too.

I also want to point out that we used ONE package of disposable swim diapers in DS's diaper life. Assuming we didn't catch a poo, we would hang the disposable up to dry and re-use it. This started while we were traveling and using hotel pools. (because they don't really absorb, they dry out quite nicely and can keep their shape.)

We have used Bummis Swimmies and Imse Vimse and love them both. We live at the pool in the summer so it is worth having a proper swim diaper. Plus really cute and less cash than most other options anyway.

The Swimmies has velcro on the front so it looks like a diaper cover. Easy to get on a little baby and the sizing runs true. The adorable cotton prints on the outside so it takes a little longer to dry. The velcro can also snag mama's suit so you may want a swimsuit on top. Soft mesh inside and great containment.

The Imse Vimse is super stretchy with two snaps on one side. Fits like a little spedo. Do not size up as the sizing runs big. The same diaper has fit my son for two years (since about 7 months) with no signs of getting too small. I love this diaper for easy pull on and off, particularly on someone who wants to be standing up. No containment problems to report.

I used an Imse Vimse for ds when he was a newborn, and it did NOT contain his EBF poop, but thankfully that experience was on dry land, just after exiting the pool.  However, I really liked the fit later on in the summer, when he'd gotten a little beefier - I'm not sure which swim dipe we'll use for this summer, I need to get looking!
