Nic - The rootbeer story cracks me up.  Too funny!

We had a nice afternoon with friends we don't get to see very often.  Our kids all get along well, so it was fun.  And one of them likes to brew his own beer.  And he's really good at it, so I may have had a bit more beer than I normally have! eat.gif

Mel - I have the same issue with speed.  It's one of the reasons I like running with someone who is a little slower than I am, because I actually get that recovery pace!  Otherwise, it is push, push, push, and I end up overtraining!  I'm glad you had a good run.

Hi Dingos!!

I am following through on my New years Rez. to post on the dingo thread more regularly LOL.  I talk to a lot of you on FB but miss our Dingo community.

Been adding in upper body and core strength training to help me get my marathon times down this year and help me through my trail marathon this summer.  It has been really rewarding and fun.  My next Race is Madison Marathon over Memorial day weekend.

The girls are awesome.  They are a ton of fun.  I have been recommitting myself to using nonviolent communication as a way to parent them and it has been working,(and also a PIA, which ends up being worth it because they respond, but oy)  but it is requiring me to be much more present, and spend more time actively parenting them.  Adds to the crazyiness as I try to balance family, work, health, me.

My littlest goes to preschool now, which has given me a ton more freedom, and I'm lovin' it!

I have to go - dinners on, but am committing myself to being HERE too!  Love you all and love this community of Dingoes which is so amazing. Cant wait to meet new folks and catch up on the old.

Smooch, ND

Hey ladies! blowkiss.gif

I'm going to work out tomorrow. I should have time after I send the kids to school, and I think tomorrow is relatively free (at this moment) from house-related obligations.

My family threw a big, nice party for us today. It was really nice to see extended family and friends all at once, and also reassuring to see so many people behind us and wishing us well. It helps.

Also watched Get Low last night with my parents and really, really enjoyed it.

ND is home!

9 miles with C today.  My Garmin had a 9:48 pace, but there was lots of waiting for traffic.  I can't get the doohicky to talk to the thingamagig without crashing the doohicky or Firefox (or both) to figure out my waiting time.  It was easily 60-90 seconds if not more, so my pace might have been as low as 9:38.

Booked tickets for 11 days in Germany plus a wedding.  Since that clearly wasn't enough of a hit on the pocket book, we're now seriously launched into the idea of remodeling the kitchen and adding a mud room.  Question: If you have a house with a mudroom and that's your primary entrance point to the house, what room does the mud room open into and how does it work out?  We could make the entry point to the rest of the house the living room or the kitchen.  We're planning to put recycling into the mud room (making opening onto the kitchen a major plus), but making it go into the living room would give us an extra 3' of counter space in the kitchen,  reduce the person-flow through the kitchen (a major problem right now), and save a window.

Personally, if I could have one off of our kitchen/dining area, that would work for us. This is our major thoroughfare in the house, where everything happens. But given your situation with the extra counter space, window, etc., I think the living room sounds better. FWIW, we also keep our recycling outside in another building, and I have a tray on a shelf in the kitchen to keep what accumulates during the day. Then I take it out on the tray once a day (or two).

Ours goes into the kitchen and is also the main thorofare from the garage into the house.  Since we NEVER use the front entrance and come in only through the garage, it works really well.  I'm not sure I'd be willing to sacrifice the kitchen counterspace or a window though... Our large recycling bin is in the garage and I have a smaller trashcan in the pantry that we fill and dump into the large bin throughout the week.

ND ~ great to see you here!  Good luck in Madison.  I need to start working my upper body a bit more too and am trying to decide if 2x a week kettlebells might be a good option.  The Y class is free, but cuts into my swim-bike-run time.

Jo ~ sounds like a lovely party!

I am still coughing like crazy and feeling pretty cruddy.  I'm not sure if I'll be up for a workout tomorrow, but we'll see how I feel in the morning.

Had a crazy week - lots of work, and then a whirlwind house shopping trip to Missouri.  Might have found a house - working on an offer.

Geo - I don't think it would be terribly inconvenient to have the recycling off the living room - better than losing counter space.  Do you know if the Columbus marathon tends to fill?  And if so, how close to the race?

BBM - sorry to leave you hanging.  I'd like to train for the full.  But - I'm starting a new job July 18, and my kids will be in a new school district and I don't know what scheduling will look like for fall activities, so I don't know if I can commit until closer to the date.  I think I'm going to start training as if I'm doing the full, though.

RR - I ran 12 today with a friend who is training for her very first half.  Her pace is quite a bit slower than my usual pace, which made it easy cardio-vascular wise, but my legs and hips were pretty sore from the extra time on them!  So nice to run with company again!

Sorry so distracted on personals - I'm too tired to think straight.

I don't think so, but let me ask my RP.  The prices start going up in mid June in 2-3 steps through October, so I'm assuming that there's space right up to the end.

Thanks for the mud room ideas.  My mom is also working on it, and she's rather <cough>opinionated</cough> not always backing up assertions...

Wedding shower was crummy; it was for a high-school friend with whom I've stayed in communication.  The one other high-school friend I expected to see there bailed, so I ended up with another girl from high school I don't know as well.  She's in the wedding, so spent much of the time talking to the two other girls at the table (a friend of hers, plus the bride's sister) about tonight bachelorette party, to which I wasn't invited and wouldn't have attended anyway.  I spent some time wandering around the restaurant, which is a beautiful space located in an old mill building, and pretending contentment while nobody talked to me.  And guzzling water to stave off an overexertion headache.

The food, I must say, was excellent.  There was a buffet, really good coffee, and beautiful cupcakes.  Even all of these years after high school, it seems the social thing is still not my best subject.  I did manage to maintain a conversation with girl at my table I didn't know; she's a biker and sometimes runner so we talked a bit about races and training.

After leaving that party early, my body rebelled against my decision to run eight miles while having my period, and then eat restaurant food and drink coffee.  When you guys do a long run, does it result in gastrointestinal distress for the rest of the day?  What do you eat after a particularly taxing run?  Should I go for comfort food?  Straight carbs?  An apple?  I'm reluctant to plan another long run if it's going to result in an afternoon of stomach misery.

Two things here...part of being good socially is noting when someone is feeling a little left out.  I watched my dd one day make a concerted effort to engage a very shy girl in with the rest of the group.  That's just as important as joining the group.  I'm sorry that people weren't more engaging.  Not really cool in my book.  I'd love to have another get together with dingos.  As for the gastrointestinal stuff.  My rp has this issue, it seems to be very linked with diet.  She can NOT drink any coffee anywhere near her long run (meanwhile I'm guzzling a couple cups before heading out).  I know she has other sensitivies that will create this issue and she has just experimented with what works and what doesn't.

That's what we do too.  It ends up being taken out probably every other day.

No worries Jen, I just started worrying a little. I haven't been on enough to know the rhythm of everyone's posting so I wanted to be sure you were okay.  I'm okay with just training like I'm doing a full, honestly the heavy duty training wouldn't really begin until June/July (hi mileage Aug/Sep).  So, I'm just trying to maintain half fitness.  I just wish I could get my hip in order. Ever since the indy-mini it's bugged me.  Wow on the house, tell us about it!

JenLove - I had those magazines in a pile to send and then they went missing. I think dh went on a cleaning mission. If I can find them again I'll get them to you.  Sorry about that. I waited to long to get them mailed out...

I did 10.25 on Sunday.  I never really caught that rhythm which bummed me out, I was so looking forward to the run. This cold snap is really irking me.  I was teased by the warm weather and now I want it to be warm darnit.  I've struggled to get my runs in, life has gotten so busy.  I, too, need that goal to keep me disciplined and putting running first on the priority list.

Hope all are well.

BBM ~ where does your hip hurt?  Outside? Groin area?  I developed a really painful hip (groin area) right after the Mini too, and it turns out that my SI joint was out of alignment.  A couple of adjustments by the new chiropractor, and I've been running with virtually no pain in my hip at all.  Do you see a chiro?  And I am totally with you on the cruel trick mother nature played with us this week.  Seriously, from 80 degrees last weekend, to 4 inches of snow and 30 degrees this weekend.  I'm done with winter!!!

DrJen ~ exciting about the house!!  Did the kids come with you on your house hunting trip?  Are your older children getting more accustomed to the idea of moving?  It's so hard at that age.

Nic ~ I just read your rootbeer float story and that's hysterical!!!!

Today is DD1's 7th birthday!!!!!  I can't believe it's been that long since my girl entered this world love.gif.  She got up nice and early this morning and we snuggled on the sofa while I told her the story of her birth.  Unfortunately, I've been up coughing since about 4:45am and I felt so crummy last night that I asked DH to reschedule our anniversary dinner for next weekend.  We can't win in the anniversary department ~ the first 4 anniversaries he was deployed, the next one I was in labor with DD, and something has always gotten in the way of our celebrating the other years.  Even still, we sat down together last night, looked through the wedding album and remembered the wonderful day 12 years before.

Congrats to your dd on the bday, JayGee...and you, too.

Geo, ours is into the kitchen and we have no alternative to that. It's almost the only entrance used (of 3). Like JayGee we never use the front door, and our other door is the porch, which we sometimes use in summer, but otherwise never. If I had to sacrifice a window and 3' of counter, though, I'd opt for the LR. Esp if kitchen traffic is already an issue. If you're a shoes-off family, then tracking dirt into the living area shouldn't be an issue. Does the LR have carpet or hard floor?

Mel, I tend to get that way with speed when I have a means to measure it. Lately, my running (well, before the back thing) has been with partners and not really metered, which is good for me. I need to be forced to ignore the speed and time and just enjoy the run once in a while.

LaLaLaLa, I agree about the shower. I'm usually gregarious, so it's easy for me, but as a gregarious person, I also tend to look for people to engage--not necessarily engage only with the people who are already connecting. At least the coffee and food were good, right?

What I didn't mention is that there was apparently a body found around the block from my parents' place the night before the party. bigeyes.gif A 36yo man. It's definitely not a violent neighborhood, so it's a little shocking. It's out in farm country, so a "block" is more than a mile away, but it happened in a house where friends used to live, a place I used to babysit. Just weird. Don't know yet who it was.

Kids are back to school today after spring break, and dd is making it a drama. Blech. I am ready for a day of rest. Mental rest, anyway.

I'm trying to imagine having so much counter space that 3' would be possible to remove!  Counter space and windows are so precious in my living space that I think I would definitely go with the entrance to the living room.  We are a shoes off house, so that wouldn't be a problem.  I like the idea of kitchen recycling being moved to the mud room at the end of each day.  And, other recycling would probably be pretty easy to take care of on a daily/weekly basis, while not creating more recycling traffic through the kitchen.

spring break was so non productive (for work and at home) it is seriously not funny. Oy. I have a lot of work to do today.

I ran once (last monday). Then my RP had to bail on Thursday and I lost my rhythm. Especially since the non-blizzard we had last week brought with it the cold (from 45 to teens and 20s).

I did get myself some new running skirts (via the sale ya'll posted about). I also ordered a garmin on the day Poppy posted. I need to get myself a headlamp for running in the dark (i own one, it just needs to be recharged).I have a new running partner: my 5 year old can ride a two wheeler. And LIKES to ride a 2 wheeler. Her big sister, not so much. Leah has been begging to ride every day for the last week. I see a run tomorrow during big sis's yoga class.....

And I have a new niece, who was supposed to be a scheduled repeat csection, but R went into labor early and doc wanted her to labor a bit so that baby would be ready to breathe when she was born. I didn't get the full details, but Baby was a VBAC!  Yay for my SIL.

And I'm building myself (slowly) a new coffee table. It is a practice project for building bookshelves to house the enormous supply of books that comes along with three family members who like to read and one of whom is a history adjunct professor (so no real office in which to house said books).

Meanwhile today I dig out from the hole I got myself into by not planning last week. Childcare for tomorrow: check. On to the next task now (class in 35 minutes).

ND: nice to see you back!

Drjen: so exciting on the house.

Geofizz: Does the entry into the living room obstruct the windows at the back of the living room? Will the living room feel like a hallway since you have the porch off to the side? What a dream: a mudroom. Sigh.

BBM: second the chiro suggestion.

Everyone else, I'll be back soon.

Hi my favorite ladies blowkiss.gif

I wanted to thank all of you for your virtual support for my half yesterday! I really felt the Dingo love, especially during one tough spot where I thought "Alright, I need to dedicate this mile to someone who will really get me through...YES! DINGOS!"

I'm coming back later for a race report because it was a remarkable race and I only scratched the surface on DailyMIle/FB.

Next up...Cooper River Bridge Run and a dingo reunion visit with Mel38!! Can't wait!joy.gif
post #415 of 511

Good Morning Dingo Mamas!

I'm taking a rest day today after yesterday's LR.  In the past I have almost never taken a rest day after, due to my work schedule.  The days I am supposed to take a rest day, and the days I can't run due to work NEVER coincide.  But, recently I am really feeling my body's need for rest.  I have always heard and read all that stuff about "Your rest day is your most important day of training blah blah blah....." and know it to be true, but feel like I really need to take it more seriously.  This means I am going to get one less run per week, which kind of stinks, but I suspect I am not getting all that much out of training runs that are done when my muscles are exhausted.....  Grrr that old work life family training balance.  do you think those marathon elitist snob people have to balance? I suspect not so much.......  And then this week, I am taking my kid to the Doctor for this crazy rash she has, and that is going to take up the room of another training run, sigh.  Whatever, that is life and the rest will probably do me good right? I wish I was one of those people that can get up insanely early and bust out a great workout before the rest of the world is awake. But hell no!!!!! Love my sleep lol.

NRR - I have been shoe shopping for a wedding that is coming up and OMG, there is some major footwear insanity out there, sandals that I don't even understand LOL.  I think I am old now Haha, I used to have hot footwear and now, as my husband says, "I really need to focus on what goes best with my yoga pants" wah wah wah. Sad but true.

Geo, a remodel huh?  Have you visited lots of homes with similar spaces that you love? If so take things from that.  Personally, I love the idea of a mud room, and wish we had one.  For me, the perfect mud room is at your most important entrance, and it is big, with lots of storage space for all the krap. It has to be big enough to be functional but it can't mess the flow up in your kitchen, or that will drive you crazy.  My Aunt had an amazing mudroom, with bench cupboards around two walls, hooks in the walls above the benches, shelves so that it functioned as pantry space/root cellar sort of room too..  The floor was done in rough slate tile.  They had a wood stove in there too.  Lots of windows and plants. It was beautiful because it was simply decorated, functional, but didn't resemble a whirlpool of household krap accumulation! Good luck with the remodel. Do the contractors have a design type person? If so get his/her opinion on what would work best if you haven't already.  And HELLO!!!! Germany- how awesome is that? Are you going kids and all?

Poppy can't wait to hear about this half with you dancing for people.  Need Report Woman!!!!!

Jo, that is crazy and sad that someone was found dead. I hope you didn't know this person :(

Kerc yay that the bike riding thing is going to workout.  Getting those little gifts of freedom is so liberating.  Yay you guys!!

JayGee, hope you feel better soon.  I hope your anniversary Jinx wears off soon.  You might have to plan an "Anti anniversary" celebration to get around the Jinx.  I remember when my kids were little, that would crush me.  To plan for so long for some special time with my husband, and then, of course, to have to cancel to due to sickness.  It happened all the time and sometimes made me so sad.  I hope you guys get some really nice time soon!

BBM good for you for pushing through the 10 when you weren't feeling it. When you figure out balance let me know, 'K ? sigh.

Dr. Jen you're moving!  Lots on your hands, may it go smoothly!  And you should definately enter a marathon LOL because a busy woman gets more done, right?

OK everybody, have a great day!

:) ND

Germany:  My Finnish "sister" is getting married.  We're all going.  10 days in Germany.

Mud room:  I'm thinking something like this:

http://www.mysimplerlife.com/blog/steps-to-organizing-and-decluttering-the-entry-way

(scroll down to the first image under the 12 steps)

It'll be on an east facing wall of the house, and I'll probably make sure there's a good window & spot for seed starting in there as well.

I'm in the ideas gathering stage, trying to sort out our priorities before calling contractors/designers.  I want to have a few things clear in my head first -- I suspect I will have to test out a few folks first before finding something that gets that we actually use our kitchen.  For cooking.  Daily.

I've got one friend who has a kitchen that looks functional in the same basic shape as ours, but she's inherently neater than we are.  Clutter and dirty dishes are such that I think that largely opening up the kitchen into the dining room to get the space will be a mistake.

The reality is that it will probably be next summer that we do this.

kerc.  Tenure.  That's evidently how one gets a mud room.  ;)

Unless it comes with a decent pay jump, it isn't happening here. We have a giant deck off the back of the house (+ what could be a walk out basement) and the front of the house isn't prime either.

One class down, one more to go. It happens in an hour.

Yes!  I remember C was (or seemed to me) slow at starting reading but now she loves it and is well above grade level and it's so satisfying to see that there was no cause for alarm, it was just her natural reading readiness.

Hmm, that's quite a trade off.  Normally I'd want it to open to the kitchen but to sacrifice that much counter space it might not be worth it.  I guess It would get the most use if it improves the traffic pattern in a realistic way.  By which I mean that if the kitchen is where everyone always wants to go, having a new thoroughfare from the living room may not change that unless there is something essentially more useful about rerouting through the new space.  Oh wait, you're not taking away counter space, you'd be adding it?  Hmm, hmm, hmm.  Windows are nice to keep too.  Good luck! ETA - I'll have to go wate a little time on your link.  How fun! :)

Thank you JayGee and BBM for mentioning this.  I was inspired to FINALLY call for a chiro appt.  My hip is killing me today, I have no idea why, I think I did something nutty like standing up from my desk chair. irked.gif

La4 - Sorry about your wedding shower.  That is such a familiar scenario.  Here not so much but everywhere else I've ever lived I've been to that party too.

Poppy - Can't wait to hear more!  It sounds exciting!

ND - You're making it a habit here I can tell!

duck.gifMe neither. Anything with a 4 in front of it is still officially nighttime to me. A 5... maybe, if someone is waiting for me and I would let them down if I didn't show up.

broc1.gif Yay! Me neither!! Weather should be nice, since we've had lots of rain to wash all the pollen away. Can't wait to read about that race, either - it sounds fantastic!

Kerc: Congrats to your SIL! Is your spring break about to start?

Plady: Oh no, your hip, too? Hip issues seem to be way too common these days. I hope it feels better tomorrow.

Jo: I can't believe how quickly this is all going, and you seem to be taking it all very calmly. Were you guys able to nail down dates for the flights?

Geo: I'm kinda jealous about your trip to Germany. Summer is so nice there. I hope the weather cooperates and you have 10 gorgeous days.

I'm making a few dishes ahead of time for my dad's visit later in the week - starting dough for bread and starter for sourdough bagels eat.gif. There's a pot of chicken noodle soup on the stove that is supposed to go in the freezer but it smells so good, it might end up as our supper.

Just popping in to say a huge THANK YOU to my Secret Sprinter, Nic!!!  I got a fabulous package of a tech shirt, note cards and a beach towel and some tea!  I love SS season, and really love getting to put that extra layer of friendship that giving and receiving gifts does. luxlove.gif
