HANDLE therapy (handlecare.org, handle.org) Anyone have any experience with this?

I was recommended Handle for my son 5 1/2.  He acts up in class, doesnt listen much, not good at learning songs  (although musical), doesnt participate much in class discussion. Developped a tic cough recently. He is strong academically though, and certainly has the ability to concentrate.

I was told Handle could benefit him. This therapy is often used in cases of adhd or autism, but  would seem to benefit anyone. Ds might have a mild auditory processing weakness, but it cant be officially diagnosed until he is 7.

I would love to hear from those with more experience.

Thanks

We are thinking of trying it.  I liked the book about it, Fabric of Autism.  Made sense to me, but it's kind of pricey so we haven't done it yet.

Looks like ill be the guinea pig then.

It is a little pricey isnt it? But its nothing compared to some other therapies ive encountered-the Davis Model of Sound 5k, AIT $1500, and a few others, EnListen, Tomatis, Fast Forword....all said to help with adhd, autism. In my sons case - for auditory processing.

ps i dont think the cough was a true tic cough, as i developped it myself for  little while. Doc didnt actually rule out a physical cause, im only taking ds to the psychologist because its free.... im fairly certain that only these expensive therapies will actually help....

pps. no amount of googling reveals anymore than thats on the website. Amd noone here seems to know anything...shrug.gif

I have a friend who did that, I'll try and remember to ask her what she thought of it.

Thanks!

Btw, another similar therapy to be added to the list -Integrated Listening Systems. They are none too forthcoming about the cost of the therapy either. But it sounds very much like EnListen (again recommended for adhd/autism/auditory issues)

I am curious if / how it works. It seems that my son might benefit from it too, with limited info available.

Our pedi recommended HANDLE to us a couple of weeks ago.  The person in our area won't have an opening until May.  I'm going to definately check it out.  Not sure of the cost, but everything seems expensive to me anyway.  We have to pick and choose, we don't have a choice.

Keep us updated.

I've heard that it is very good but we have not tried it. The originator was or is autistic and supposidly cured herself. it is very pricy. I know that some of waht they do is like things recomended in Out of Sync child like occupational therapy. Wish I could help more.

Contact maya, have you had an evaluation by an OT yet?

No OT eval yet, but he hasnt really shown sensory issues, more auditory issues.

Auditory issues are often caused by sensory problems of the vestibular system  and so can acting out in class. I would check out the book The Out of Sync child. From what I have heard about Handle, many of the things they do are also things that are suggested in that book.

I appreciate the input. I hope that his evaluation with HANDLE will bring out any issues. However, when asked the typical questions pointing to sensory issues, like-trouble with transitions, sleep issues, sensitvity to textures,  ds has none of these symptoms. So, we'll see...
