Books for a 2 year old

Thread Starter

Please recommend books to read to my almost 2 year old. We are looking for books to read before bed, with more than a few words on a page. He has a pretty good attention span and comprehension level when it comes to books. (He likes the Curious George books, so that's the comprehension level I'm looking for.)

Thanks!

My son seems to like routine (read "same books over and over and over!) and likes animals, so some of the books we have the he enjoys at bedtime are:

Poetic:

Good Morning, Good Night. (he likes to "tickle" each animal goodnight!)

The Going to Bed Book (new classic!)

Storylike:

The Snuggliest Snuggle in the World (the voices can be fun to make)

I Love My Mommy Because (and it's counterpart I Love My Daddy Because) are GREAT, and you can teach "baby" animal names like cub, chick, etc!

So Many Bunnies (subliminally teaches ABCs and rhymes LOL)

If you want different books each night, I'd suggest taking a look at your local library's selection and asking the childrens section librarian.

We just bought a bunch of new books for my 2 year old DD (I love half.com!) and she's also a curious George fan.  Here's what we got:

Llama Llama mad at mama

Llama Llama red pajama

The Cat in the Hat

Green Eggs and Ham

One Fish Two Fish...

Fancy Nancy

No T-Rex in the Library

If you give a mouse a cookie

Maisy Big, Maisy Small (ok, not too many words per page but she just loves this one so much but there are a lot of other Maisy books with more words per page out there).

Go Dog Go

Also some of her favorites:

Where the wild things are

It's the best day ever dad!

In the Night Kitchen

The Hat

The Mitten

Blueberries for Sal

Tyger Voyage

Of course, we're more often stuck reading books about dinosaurs and trucks...

We go through about twenty books a week at our house, so rather than give titles, I'll tell you how we 'shop' for books at the local library.

I look for books with:

  • about a paragraph of text on each page
  • with characters that are not yet school-aged (I find the content of those books are not as captivating fr my dd).  There are exceptions to this ... Kevin Henkes, and the Katie Morag stories, for example.
  • any books with animals, bugs, abc's, numbers, babies, or planes (dd's current obsessions)
  • graphics that I like and think dd will like (I'm not a huge fan of super-chartoony illustrations)
  • authors that have a good track record, or have prize decals on the cover
  • illustrators that tend to work with good authors
  • books that have been set out as 'library picks'
  • rhyming verse
  • publishing houses with backlists that I like
  • recommendations of other parents at the library
  • and I let dd pick whatever she wants, sometimes appropriate, sometimes not, but she likes to choose some too
  • classics or books that I enjoyed as a child

Out of the two dozen books or so that we bring home a week, about three or four we don't read more than once.  Those are usually poorly written (I don't like them), have content that I find disagreeable (a character calling another character stupid or dum, for example, or with violence), or don't hold dd's interest.

A few current faves:

Mog

Slink Malinki

Katie Morag

Courdoroy

Harry the Dog

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (and the others in the series)

Max and Ruby

Any books by:

Shirley Hughes

Mem Fox

Mo Willems

Kevin Henkes

Oliver Jeffers

We are a huge book-loving family here and DS is my little bookworm.  He really loves anything by Dr. Seuss but some Seuss that are particularly fantastic for early readers are:

-The Eye Book

-The Tooth Book

-ABC

-Ten Apples Up On Top

I found he really liked books that had a real rhythm to the words/paragraphs.  Others he really loved were:

-Go Dog Go

-Red is Best

-Are you my mother?

-Chicka chicka boom boom

-Chicka chicka 123

Hope that helps!
