Math Club Ideas

DH & I will be putting together an after-school math club at DS' school next year. The administration is really encouraging of the idea, and they're open to our thoughts on how it will run. The school is only K-1. While the math club will be available to everyone, it really will be geared toward students advanced in math. I'm looking for fun ideas. Anyone?

You might try "24." My eldest really loved it in elementary. Basically, it's a game where each player is given 4 numbers and you must manipulate them with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) in a way to make 24 as fast as you can.

I used to run a game club before school and we played chess, checkers, tic-tac-chec, Gobblet, Sum Swamp, Dominos, Speed, chair stack and more. You might incorporate some of those types of games that aren't directly math oriented but use that part of the brain.

Other games that are great for math:

Cribbage (teaches really quick adding, grouping to achieve 15)

Tangrams

Mastermind

Blokus

I've heard good things about the game: Math Noodlers (they make versions for different grade levels)

I like the game Set

Rush Hour or Rush Hour Jr., depending on the age of the kids

You could set up a store/restaurant and have the kids buy things and give appropriate change. If you made the price tags, you could work on addition/subtraction/multiplication for various quantities. ($2.88 + $3.33 = ??).

Cooking is good for fractions (double/halve a recipe for extra challenge).

Games are great - Sum Swamp is a favorite around here.

For a more radical idea, check out www.mathcircles.org - I love these people!!!  They start with littles (age 4-5) and go up and up.
