Taxes?

How do you file taxes while divorcing? I have a feeling our divorce is going to take a veeerrry long time. In the meantime I need to file taxes, and we are not amicable enough to do it together.

When I was in this situation (separated in July, divorced the following January), I filed as "married filing separately". I only needed the information on my income and taxes paid. I don't know if he even filed his taxes that year.

When we found out we would lost a fortune filing separately, we made it work to file jointly. Most of it was done by email, very little contact required.

(It made so much of a difference to me, I would have made money even if I had to hire a lawyer to communicate with him.)

How did you make sure you were given 50% of the return?

We've filed jointly for the last few years that we've been separated. I do it online and have any refunds deposited to my account, and then I transfer his portion to his account (I am still on the joint acct. to ensure that I can access it if anything happens to him since we don't have anything legal in place)

the divorce should be final in the next 6 mo (CA waiting period, there should not be any outstanding issues to deal with), so next year will be my first year filing single in 13 years
